*Make cyprus44 healthy again* Too late, it's hardly worth reading more than once a week now, what with all the bitching, doggies needing homed, bars ads, apartments/villas to let and other general rubbish, its had its day imo, just the usual few 'druggies' contributing one liners on a regular basis

There is simply no point in "life banning" someone,...all the reasons have been mentioned before regarding "for or against" it but for me its all about fair moderation. If mods simply lose it and dish a life ban out then they should not be a mod at all it just creates a bigger problem. If someone is being a pain in the ass and causing trouble on a thread just suspend them for 24/48 hrs til the thread has cooled off and if they constantly fall foul of the rules then put it to a public vote to give a week,.. month,.. or life ban. Just manage the situation that all it takes. My opinion thats all.

Message 12. I honestly think it really does not make a difference and im sure the mods are of the same thought, with VPNs and IP address changers and if you wish you can use 6ms VPN to download mucky movies and new movies and he can blame people in cyprus, its so easy to re-invent yourself here if you wish, luckily i only need 1 ID,ive nothing to hide. Pity about the rest.

philbailey msg 17 - exactly the same as anyone else can with even a modicum of technical knowledge. IP addresses have never been unique to an indivdual person or even an indivdual internet account, even without taking into account the use of systems to sepcificaly mask or change them. There are many people trying to 'solve' the problem of provable (and unique) identity on the internet via many different systems. From IBM, to Equifax to Microsoft and a hundred others. Currently one of the most pratical means is to require credit card information as part of the sign up process. Amazon, recognising the abuse of multiple accounts from 'reviewers' now has a system that shows if a given account uses a 'real name' attached to a credit card or not for example. http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=14279641#realname

Just in case anyone is interested here are a couple of quotes about 'identity' from an article I wrote around 2001 about the idea of a CAN (community area networks). http://dek.spc.org/x/canx.html "A central difference that a CAN would have from existing generic internet access would be identity. With identity on a CAN relating to a physical point in a physical community a whole range of possible ‘trust based’ network applications become increasingly viable. Schemes to rate anything from local plumbers to local library provision. Individuals and businesses will be able to build up a ‘profile’ based on their actions in the local community. Your trust rating may become more important than your credit rating in such an environment." "Running an online forum on a CAN would be very like running such a discussion forum on the internet. These forums however will hark back as much to the original forum in Rome because they like it will be based on local geography and identity."
