just out of interest if a mechanic revs up a car for about 1 hour on a regular basis in say 1 month how does it help the car???

It doesn't !!!, but they think it sounds good, just as those with Turbo Charged cars give the throttle a blip before switching off, thus no oil being pumped round,leading to premuture Turbo failure, But You cant tell 'em.!!!
