I lived in paphos for a year and from december to febuary it got a little cold at night in my townhouse with no heating at all,but it was bearable, most people had a mobile gas heater which they had on from about five to bedtime,if i stayed on i would have bought one myself.my question is negative nick has said in a recent post that its freezing in his villa at night from november to april, now unless its a lot colder in the north which i doubt, that makes no sense to me i was sunbathing most days in febuary and it was pleasant most days a week anyway,i admit i was watching tv wearing a coat now and again in january but i had no heating at all,im hoping someone will tell me its no worse than what i experienced in the south,as the warm winters are one of the biggest reasons for this move.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the winters are bloody freezing here. Poor building standards are mostly to blame and many suffer from damp which makes the whole situation ten times worse however last year we purchased a portable dehumidifier which made an amazing difference to the damp in our north facing bedroom and consequently found it easier to heat with our electric rads also helped with how fast we could dry our clothes which was a bonus. but be warned i have never been as cold in the winter as i have been whilst living in Cyprus. for anyone interested in the dehumidifier we got it from Amazon in the uk and brought it back in our suitcase. here is the link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Delonghi-148110002-DeLonghi-Compact-Dehumidifier/dp/B000BP81DW/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1309626440&sr=8-24

Lived three years in the South - in buildings far more shoddy than the one I live in up here in the North - year one was chilly, year two was colder, year three was cold but the mobile gas heater cured the problem and the last house we had in the South had an open fire as well so that was a Billy Bonus! Here much the same - live inside a concrete block and what you have is a night storage heater over your head in the summer and a freezer around you in the winter - seems to be the longer you spend here the colder the winters get but that is just you getting used to the climate - lots of people never get used to it because they either run away in the summer or run away in the winter but still say they live here! Live like a local and you can be toasty in the winter and comfortable in the summer but your diet also has a role to play in this. The answer is NO, its not colder in the North until the wind from Turkey blows the cold of the snow off the mountains towards you.

mess 6 - i has gas central heating in mine..... the villas are little more than concrete tents - putting the central heating on just seamed to get the radiators hot and the way the gas prices went up, it became v expensive to run anyway......

The best answer is by far to try it yourself. I moved here last August and I was dreading the "winter" mainly because of what people had told me on here and when winter arrived, I was pleasantly surprised . I was made to fear the worse but I was still swiming in the pool until early November - daytime still warm and sunny but the evenings however do get colder from 4.00 pm onwards, and yes, damp. I have no central heating and also do not have double glazing. Light a fire for the main living room to watch Tv and a potable gas fire for the dining/study area. Upstairs an electric blanket is heaven - it warms and gets rid of any damp - aircon onto hot for a quick blast of warmth - plug in electric radiator for the bathroom but have some electric towel heaters now to wire in - I found the worse thing was damp towels! I also bought a few rugs rather than walk on cold marble. So.... yes it does get cold and damp but at least you know here that it is just for a couple of months and then you

are back to warmth and sunshine again. I didn't even wear a coat or jacket last year - just a jumper. The problem is more the heat in the summer. Hope that helps!

Until they start building thermally efficient houses, with damp proofing , you will continue to struggle ,both summer and winter ...........When you live in a "Cypriot" built Villa you are living in nothing more than a fancy Garage....

Agree with message 7, we lived in Paphos and the temperatures are about the same. As far as the buildings are concerned if people think buildings are bad here you ought to see how they throw them up there!! I do think we acclimatise so the winters probably feel colder the longer you are here.
