How many ex pats would have moved to north cyprus if they had come into big money before they made there decision, and how many would of gone to south cyprus instead or would it have been a different country.

Two very different places. I lived in the south when it was as the north is now. There are far more important matters than property prices to make one live somewhere. the lifestyle, the people, the ambiance, the prices, the facilities, the crime rate etc, etc etc. And of course now the south is Euroland which could for some be an advantage whilst to others a disadvantage. it is really a matter of personal choice because the places are so very different in so many ways.

The 'north' has ( overall ) the best coastline features - but the 'south' has more facilities .. if you have to work for a living then the 'south' has more possibilities and the 'north' is a nice place to come to get away from it all - for a change... ALL Cypriots are friendly, really - as are Turks and Greeks One day it will ALL be under the EU... if TR joins.. and the differences ( little as they are) will blur..

I haven't visited this forum for a while, but I remember reading articles which suggested that the TRNC was rather 'lawless'. As I'm in the process of planning a move to Cyprus, this is certainly a factor to my way of thinking. Any comments?

Property is certainly much more expensive in the south but there are other issues. The north is quieter and certainly more scenically attractive along the north coast where you have the sea views and the mountain backdrop. For the purposes of business or work though, the south is much easier to deal with. The other factors are that the tax situation in the south is far more beneficial especially if you happen to have pension income that is taxed in the UK. and also it is possible to get free medical treatment in the south if you are resident there. The downside is that the south is generally more expensive these days - food shopping, eating out etc. So, it all comes down to what suits your circumstances.

thanks for your opinions I love paphos and could easily go back, but as im in a position where i dont need to work both north and south could work,i plan to take up golf. I have an non european income and in the south i would only have to pay a witholding tax of 15% on dividends and infact if your employed in the south your foreign income is exempt from tax,but im not working long hours in a poorly paid job just for that privelidge,i believe the north is tax free on foreign dividends anyway so thats a big bonus. Also as someone mentioned the views in girne are second to none moutains behind you and sea to the front. My dream is to build a nice villa some day and i believe i can get the perfect plot for a great price in the north,in the south i will have to save for a while. But my point is just because somewhere is cheaper it does not mean it is better, but many of you have said the people in the north are nice so i believe its worth a shot, but there seems a lot of a red tape.

Must just refer to the 'lawless' comment. sounds like a bit of propaganda put around by those who have a dislike for the north. The only cowbloys are the builders, and the only indians work in restaurants - but what kind of lawless did you mean. The police are o.K- the law is changed more than it is upheld, but folk are pretty decent, upright and honest - unless they are builders. (well, not all of them). Seriously, it is one of the more lawful places in the world. So, come and see foryourself.

It would be a very significant reason to live in the North if only it were possible to buy a property.

You can buy as many properties as you like, pre '74 included - however, there's only one minor consideration -you can never own one! Whilst you are a 'non-citizen', you cannot say you own your property; simply because you can easily be deported and, therefore, if this should happen, be denied access to your property in perpetuity.

even if you was deported, you must be able to sell on, or rent your property out,if you have the right deeds.

anyone depending on a UK based pension or other forms of income will have lost, just like me, approx 36% in exchange rates bewteen the Pound Sterling and the Euro! that is a significant sum. Life in general in the North, the Turkish Cypriots and the scenery are real plus points. Everything else we have to adapt to like in any other country. Rentals are far too expensive! The local TCs would never pay what many Brits are paying.

The north is a very safe place to live with a very low crime rate, there is little problem with youth and alcohol or drugs in the meantime that the majority of people are aware of. On a personal level locals are very honest and friendly.Where it gets more complex is where property and larger sums of money are involved. Is housing cheap? there are a number of different perspectives on this if you've bought and got a kocan maybe, that is if you dont have problems with damp rising up from the non existant foundations every winter, a house which costs a fortune to keep warm because the heat you are paying a lot for disappears out the egg shell walls, and you have main water and electricity, not tankered every week and buiders electric at an exorbitantly high tarriff for years on end. I think there are a lot of costs that you may not have been aware of when you first come here and you. do need a decent income to live here now. If it all works as it should there isnt a better place but if

you've handed over a lot of money to a builder and end up with nothing but heartache it has to be the worst place and certainly not cheap in anyones book.

Cheap houses poorly built..........North and South............ whether or not you love it here,is to a large extent governed by where you come from... Inner-city folk will obviously enjoy the lack of "Concrete Jungle"....Personally I think the place has huge potential.......Sadly, never to be realised..........Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,I have seen far prettier places............And if you have travelled,be honest, so have you......
