I have friends looking to rent here for a year or more but having searched through the agents I really don't think they can afford such high rental prices. Some small 3 bedroom apartments in the Lapta/Alsancak area are £400pm, which is almost uk rental price. Some want £300pm but have no white goods in the kitchen and are unfurnished, so it means spending around £3000+ before you even start living there. When someone told me the trnc was expensive now I didn't really think about it, but I have certainly had my eyes opened wide by these rental prices. No wonder many properties stand empty, if they dropped the rent by £100pm they would be permanently occupied and would be earning an income, instead of being empty and falling into disrepair. Just my moan for the day, I will be ok when I have had a cuppa.

Yorgozlu I appreciate what you are saying but it depends where you live, as in the south of the uk the earnings are much higher than in the north of the uk, where property and rentals are much lower.

Billo - you have to remember that some owners live in the UK and if they rent their properties they have to pay UK tax on additional earnings AND 10% to TRNC (as there is no dual tax recognition with UK). This may account for the resistance to lower rents. I would imagine you still end up with a nicer apartment / small villa than a UK equivalent for the same price...
