A friend was told last week at the crossing that as he is over 60 he doesnt need the temporary visa every year. Does anyone know who he can contact to get reliable information about this? As we all know its a different story who ever you ask.

Deniz1, Snakes was told this also at the crossing. As you know, there are many people here over 60 who have a temporary residence here and it does make you wonder why they say this!

I know i have heard it before but is it reliable? Why pay money when you dont have to? He said he will go and ask at the police station but i was trying to find out if there is a higher authority who can give a reliable answer.

If you are over60 you don't have to apply every year, instead you pay for 2 years and hence go through the rigmarole Biennially....

That is what him in doors has done. I don't think they meant "over 60 you don't need it anymore" That would be way to simple and organised.

It is certainly the case that there is no fine for anybody over 60 who does not have residency and this I do know for certain. So this begs the question - if there is no penalty for not having residency, why bother with it? The only reason is to keep up a TRNC driving licence which you cannot obtain without residency. Motor insurance is not valid without a TRNC licence if you stay here for more than 90 days. It's an absolute certainty that no government jobsworth is going to admit to anything other than what goes on now. The only way that you may get a definitive answer is to speak to the head of immigration in Lefkosa or the minister responsible for immigration matters and, even then, you would definitely want something in writing from them. I would actually like to know myself as I drive on a UK licence which is, for me, legal so if I could stop the annual/bi-annual residency charade I certainly would!

Can the BRS look into this and confirm one way or another?? We have just got our 2 years residency - 780 YTL. I can't see the Government forgoing all our payments just because we're over 60. It's true that we've also heard the same rumours so a definite answer would be very welcome.

I believe the BRS did answer this question when it came up reasonably recently (well, this year) and I think the answer was it is sensible to have your residency in your passport whatever is said. Things change too quickly here, and bettet to be safe and get your 2 year one than end up in trouble if you have a policeman or immigration official who doesnt "know" what you think you know.

The rules are quite clear. You need a residency permit issued for a minimum of 1 year to stay here more than the temporary initial 30- 90 days. This is renewable every year except that....Over 60s may request renewals for a two year period, but the grant of 2 year permits is not automatic. The cost of a 2 year renewal is double that of a 1 year renewal. There is no way to LEGALLY stay in the TRNC without such a permit. Applications for renewal should be made between 30 and 15 days before the permit expires. Don't let your permit expire: there are hefty fines for doing so! acknowledgement to BRS.
