...wonder how the gc's would react to this sort of thing? after all, officially, cyprus-nicosia and russia are "close" but I can only imagine their response would be twofold: firstly blank denial, or call it studied disinterest if you like secondly, when every tom ivan and olga start buying up "their" property, a case of "et tu brute" perhaps time for a compromise then? ...don't wait up! tucobird I hope I don't do you an injustice if the place was originally turk/cypriot rather than exchange trnc title

saffi, I hear what you say but despite claims to the contrary they are generally shrewd and discriminating buyers and they seem subdued compared to the well-advertised shenanigans of inebriated brits around the med and in north cyprus there are very few buyers of any sort nowadays, the british having been badly clobbered by the withdrawal of mortgages on their uk house ...for investment overseas there are plenty of things that can affect the ambiance in north cyprus: think of flytipping, changes due to emigration, abandoned projects, the embargo, insensitive development etc north cyprus cannot continue to survive on easy money transferred from the motherland

Msg 6 - If you had not said the magic word "embargo" you could have been talking about the UK, so what's the difference anyway and which is the motherland - Turkey or USA?

andre514/msg 6: 'north cyprus cannot continue to survive on easy money transferred from the motherland' It seems to have done pretty well so far if the swelling numbers of Porsche Cayennes, Range Rovers, Hummers, Mercs and BMW's are anything to go by! One wonders if any Turkish 'top brass' have ever noticed this, or pondered about it, as they ease themselves into their Tofashes back home, and thinking: 'Next time we go to Kibris, we'll politely ask them to kindly cease this increasingly vulgar exhibition of OUR wealth!'

Saffi re msg 5 >>I hope the russians are not coming, Money investment regardless they will destroy the whole ambiance of the TRNC<< Yeah, right ! :D >>The South is suffering from their presence regarding tourism , Everyone who comes back from the south to the UK said they will not return because of the russian invasion ! Take heed !!!<< Oh yes, and 'they' are saying the same in Thailand, Egypt, Turkey and all the other destinations where former Soviet folk are now visiting... Naturally, I 'biased' being married to a Russian - but your sweeping generalisations / exaggerations don't do you much credit.. Personally, speaking I've seen far more to be ashamed of re the conduct of drunken UK / Irish folk ..

I'm sure the Russians don't want to spoil the current local ambience we experience and enjoy - they too will want to enjoy the traditional Full English Breakfasts / Man U v Man C televised football derby / Pub Quiz Night / Friday night Fish and Chips / Kareoke etc

Personally speaking we sold our apartment to russians on the 23rd March complete with Kocan, all bills and taxes paid and at this point in time still haven't received a cent! Naomi Mehmet is dealing with them now. Further to that in our complex of 17 apartments 5 have been bought by Russians and since January 2010 not one of them have paid any maintenance charges of £20 a month!

it still looks like sour grapes though they will have to shape up maintenance-wise, after all, living in a resort is not quite as individualistic as slinging up a datcha in the woods using prefabricated components having bought into a lot of south cyprus, the russians etc will logically seek out northern shores: and obviously the old lion is growling, but can do very little what is especially galling is that the uk, having agreed to pay a *million pounds for cyprus in 1878, and heavily influenced the local culture (only place in the med where you can get a good cuppa?) fings just ain't wot they used to be, ie.,cash-strapped britain, and an isolated euro-zapped continent ...or better perhaps to go along with evelyn waugh's "abroad is bloody"? *assuming john bull ever did hand over the purchase price, nobody seems very sure on that score

We sold our property to Russians last month. It was a nice experience having actually received more than our asking price and they picked up the tab for all other fees and expences: They also wanted us to retain a key for the house and car so we could continue visiting Cyprus until such time as they are prepared to live full time in Lapta. ( we did not do so) They are a nice couple from the Ukraine and Azerbaijan who we hope will make many friends and will enjoy the property and life style N Cyprus has to offer. In time the island may realize the errors of their ways making if very difficult to again attract retired citizens of GB.

I have said it before and I'll say it again - outside investment and a recovery of the building industry (with appropriate governance and control measures which the lack of has blighted the industry in the past) can only be a good thing. I also think that lower end single house / villa purchases should be viewed a little less suspiciously - the buyers are probably nice people after all.....

I cannot speak for any russians in the anecdotes above, but although russia is in many ways a complicated and opaque country to live in, it does not automatically mean that every property purchase is fraudulent many things we would take for granted like simple international cash transfers and use of cashpoints and credit are not the general rule over there embarassingly british/irish/eu people are often viewed as unrealistically honest and straightforward, and yet many russians also see the west as unfriendly after their doors were unbolted twenty years ago, at least for those who could afford it, a gradually increasing number of russians are looking south for property since with hyperinflation followed by the 1998 crash nothing seems certain ...bear in mind the caucasus states are not welcoming, egypt has a host of unresolved issues while another regular port of call, turkey may be seen as a foretaste of turkish cyprus ...while the roc is already home turf

tenakoutou message 32, I wonder... there are differences between the traditional british buyer and russians firstly the ruskies will have learned from british mistakes ...and mainly buy resales too secondly, a lot of the british buying power was fueled by unsustainabably cheap credit that has been withdrawn, the russians have no such option and must take extra care

Good and Bad everywhere you go, I've worked and lived with both Russian and Brits and although Brits would have a similar sense of values, the Russians aren't so different really and in a lot of instances make better friends. Their country isn't as politically correct as the UK & EU and it's maybe all the better for it. When you consider one in six UK passport holders have an ethnic origin from either Africa, India or Pakistan the chance to meet and mix with a pleasantly different culture is nice imo.

Visitors from former soviet union countries find it very easy to visit Northern Cyprus in contrast to the ROC. My wife was Ukrainian by birth but is now a British citizen. Before she had a British passport gaining access to ROC was a nightmare. The woman at the consulate in Manchester was incredible rude and arrogant. Even when presented with my bank and pension statements she said she couldn't be sure she would return to the UK after a two week visit to friends in Pathos. And you need to repeat this in person for every visit. By contrast since completing our house we have been visited by a number of friends from Ukraine who loved every minute in the north and had no problem getting there through Istanbul in a very short time. Mark, maybe our wives should set up an estate agent for former su countries they couldn't do any worse than the ones already working there!!

erwin msg 39, this is a very valid point that had never occured to me I always feel defensive about the north if it is just a question of cheaper prices ...dunno what is provable 'bout quality of life, but the scenery is superb to be sure oh well, suppose I shall cop it when you-know-who fakes it back on to cyprus 44: "psst... wanna buy a cheap property that fell off the back of a KRAZ 214 lorry"?
