Kantara - not such a dream it seems. Noonie ( http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/67853.asp ) expects to earn this in 32.5 hours - presumably without any deductions.

I can think of people who would sell their souls for 1300tl a week. In private occupation, not working for the Government. They are a different kettle of fish altogether!!

Msg 2;

Actually, it is 1300 tl per month PLUS the social security, special needs box (ihtiyat sandığı), and income tax - it all adds up to another 330-340 tl a month making the gross basic wage near enough 1650 tl per month (Definitely not what private teachers get from the money pinching / slave driving private academies in this country!)

andrew4243 is correct.....deductions [around 506TL per month] are taken off the minimum wage so there is not very much left to live off.

Msg 11

Since when? I take it you never worked or employed people for minimum wage in this country! If you read my message carefully I state "gross basic (min) wage works near enough 1650 TL". That is because the employment ministry here works out and declares the "minimum net wage" for an employee. All other taxes and social security contributions are then worked out by the employer who pays the gross min wage. But more often than not, they simply offer/show the min net wages (1300TL), and pay up the difference for special needs contributions & social security. Tax on basic wage is only about 19 tl a month, something which most employers pay without a fuss. In fact, a new law came up recently, to encourage employers recruit T. Cypriots. It refunds "special needs contributions" TO THE EMPLOYER at the end of the year, if they employ TCs. Had it been the way you suggested, the money would have been refunded to the contributor i.e. the wage earner who is supposed to have paid for it.

The rules and deductions are different for foreigners.......as a limited company 506TL is taken by the government every month for each employee.

If you don't mind telling, may I ask what the minimum wage you were getting was, two years ago?

Deniz-1;

I think you were conned by the employers! The only reason we have had illegal workers working for 1200 TL wage for the past few years is because the employers do not have to pay the social insurance and the special needs contributions to the government! If they were included in the minimum wage (as you claim, "they were" in your case - and I have no reason to doubt that), there would be no need for anyone to work illegally. Their contributions would have been automatically deducted by the employer and paid to the necessary department.

However, deductions for providing accommodation and food can be further made from the minimum wage...

Just to add my pennyworth. In 23 years of being an employer here. I have yet to employ someone who would not work for me un less I paid all tax and social sigorta ( national insurance ) contributions. Also for many years I cannot get a local Turkish Cypriot to work at gardening, cleaning, washing up etc. Those days are long gone!.
