| Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY) has announced that they are preparing to start direct flights to Scandinavian countries despite international law forbidding direct air links between Ercan Airport and European states According to a press statement, a deal signed between KTHY and the DETUR Tourist Agency, flights from Ercan Airport (Tymbou) and Turkey’s Antalya Airport to Sweden, Norway and Finland will begin in February 2009. The first flight will be a direct flight to Helsinki from Ercan Airport, but the report adds that most other flights will be carried out from the Antalya Airport on the Turkish mainland. The official responsible for communications in north Cyprus, Salih Usar, said that North Cyprus area will have “big gains” with KTHY flights to Scandinavian countries. Usar also informed that work is underway to establish flights to Israel as well, which he said is expected to be completed soon. | How many times have we heard this about non stop flights to the TRNC. Call me negative if you like but, there is more chance of the Girne by pass being completed before February than non stop flights. Michael |
