I am hoping to buy a secondhand car in the next couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone could advise me how long the process takes to get the sale sorted out and registered. I appreciate that I need to get a mukthar's letter (not sure what it needs to say) but can the process of changing over ownership be completed in one day or is it a more drawn out process?

Is this a private or motor-dealer sale?

Hi you can easily do it in one day providing you can get hold of your Muhtar. There is a form on which the buyer & seller fill in their details, the details of the car, the Muhtar signs it then you have to take it to Lefkosa DVLC with the Registration Document which is then changed into your name.

We have used a 'fixer' who I think charged 100tl to do all this for us but if you like going to Govt Depts you can do it yourself!

Thanks for that ozankoys. is the form part of the registration document or does it have to be collected from somewhere?

I think you may be able to get one from the Tax Office in Girne but am not sure you could certainly try there first.

Hi twaddle,

We bought a 2nd hand car privately in January and this was the procedure. Seller & buyer went to muhcters office and completed forms , he signed forms and then we went to the insurance office where the insurance was transferred into our names. We then went to the tax office in Lefkosia and did the transfer, all of this took the best part of a day. Take plenty of water with you and be prepared for a long wait in Lefkosia.
