Which is the best programme to use? My desktop seems to be a bit slower than normal.

my advice is just do a fresh install commercial progs seem to make it go even slower and might delete some of your important stuff before you do an install make sure you back up everything you want

Down a free bit of software called "Ccleaner" It's great and safe and very fast.

I've used it for a couple of years and you'll notice a difference.

Definately the best 'clean up' is a reinstall or reset to 'factory settings' if your machine comes with the necessary for such a 'reset' in my opinion. You may be able to claw back some 'speed / performance' using registry cleaners and other such programs but none will give the same results as a fresh install / factory reset.

Also worth checking the hard drive for fragmentation , especially if you using XP, as XP tends not to defrag automaticaly by default, where as vista and 7 do tend to.

Aranae, you can find sites that allow you to download this product for free, or torrents of 'free' versions, but the product is not free, beyond an intal trial period. Any site offering it for free is 'stealing' it. I am not making any moral judgment about using such software, but its not right to label the prodcut as 'free' when it is not in fact free. There are genuinely free programs out there and then there are 'hacked' versions of pay software. Any such 'hacked' version comes with a degree of risk that is not the same if you buy the software, or if it is genuinely 'freeware'. Just trying to be clear here.

Richard does it say this file WILL harm your computer or thie file MAY harm your computer ?

If you have a moment I'll skype you and remote connect to your PC so I can see the message myself if that is ok. I suspect it is just a general warning that you get with any downloaded executable file, any of which may harm your computer, but if the source is trusted then it will not in practice. CCleaner is a well established product and the link I gave is the direct download from the people who make it. THere should be no risk in downloading and installing this program, provided you do not use it mistakenly to secure erase your whole hard drive that is.

Just checked with Richard. The message he is getting is a standard warning that Internet Explorer gives when you download any executable file from the internet, depending on your IE security settings. The message says 'this type of file could harm your computer". Any executable file could harm your computer but it is down to 'trust'. Can you trust the 'source' from where you are downloading the file is the relevant question and in this case you can trust it. The source is the people who make the CCleaner software, a company called piriform.com. The program itself is widely used and reviewed by many reputable sites. So basically you can trust the download and the program itself.

Use help and support window 7, on your pc, 'slow performance', and let the troubleshooter 'fix it'.
