Please can anyone give me more information - I have today read on the back page of Kibris Newspaper that Ian Rush, Bruce Grobbelaar and Steve McManaman are coming to TRNC in August to play a football match. I have searched the internet but I cannot find any more information about this including the date of the match, time, and where it will take place. Does anyone else know any more details please or how you can get tickets? Many thanks in advance Jayne

Hi Jayne, Im a very big Liverpool Fan, and have trawled all the Liverpool Websites and cannot see any mention at all of this. I am surprised as Rushey is an Ambassador for Liverpools link with the Sponsors Standard and Chartered bank and runs football academies on their behalf in many third world countries. Maybe Standard and Chartered are looking at Banking here, but that I personally find very hard to believe. Hope I am wrong and you get tickets or watch the game etc. Phil Thompson and Gary McAllister regularly visit and play Golf at Korineum though.

Maybe Rob Shields has managed to persuade them to come over and help out at his August football academy for up-and-coming young players.

Went to see them yesterday. They are running a 3 day coaching academy at the 20 Temuz stadium, which is located near Patara City. Times 5pm to 8pm. On Thursday they will be running a mini world cup event with all the lads who are attending. On Friday they will be playing a local Turkish all stars team 6 -6.30 kick off. As far as I know there is no entrance fee.

Re ; msg 30 I presume itfc1978's tongue is planted firmly in his cheek when he writes "I see lfc are borrowing another Ipswich Town legend David Johnson, as well as Johhny Wark" Admittedly Wark had his best days at Ipswich, but the same can not be said of Johnson: He played for Liverpool between 1976 and 1982, where he won three European Cup medals and scored 55 goals. In any case, both Wark and Johnson have played for Liverpool, so this visiting team are hardly "borrowing" them from Ipswich

Mess 36; No precedense (sic) has been set. This event does not involve a team registered with any internationally rcognised football association. In effect it's a pick up game, but even so a very welcome one. Should be a pleasant evening.

I guess you are coming down the dual carriageway from Lefkosa ??? If so,turn left at the waterfall roundabout, carry straight on,over the next roundabout and carry on down where the road goes to one lane, then at the next roundabout (coffee shop on your left),turn left, the stadium is about 200 meters up on your left,a white building with turnstyles.

As a life long Liverpool fan I am absolutely delighted that the Liverpool Legends did arrive as promised. Each afternoon I have popped down to the July 20 Stadium to watch the sessions. Although disappointed by the meagre turnout of spectators, ex-pats and Cypriots, I have met some really nice people, and only a few of whom are Liverpool supporters. The reason for this post is to appeal to everyone, Mums, Dads, Grandparents, youngsters and football fans to come and support the game this evening at 6.30pm. As we all know, organising even local events is problematic – it is even more difficult when it involves bringing people over. It has been lovely to see so many local lads attend the sessions – it’s been a joy to watch and I feel proud that an event such as this is actually taking place here in the TRNC. I also know that if there are great numbers of spectators showing their support tonight, the organisers intend to approach other Premier League Legends as well.

This is a free event – even if you are not a football fan, this has all been done in great spirit and will be an enjoyable evening. The winners of last nights tournament will be presented with their trophy and all attendees will receive some goodies. Also FREE, there has been some great entertainment this week courtesy of the Municipality. Again, please support these events to ensure that they continue. The program for August is advertised in the Cyprus Today. We have much to be thankful for, not least to be living in such a still beautiful part of the world.

The coach will return to Lapta once the match has finished. If anyone is interested, pls call 0533 8356114 - pls do not reply on here as we prob wont have time to check again later. Thanks. |

Having used to live near the stadium many years ago please be aware that parking is terrible, although there is a very small car park, cars are abandonded willy nilly in every direction. If you are coming from the West I would advise that you turn right at the Ship Inn and use the mini bypass and park in the side streets above the stadium, coming from the East,at the Police station/Market roundabout, take the first left and follow the road round to the right(not left and left) and park further up on Sehitler Caddesi. Thanks to DC for uploading the free map,the stadium is located at G-10 http://www.allcrusades.com/CD/cypmap/map_of_girne/map_of_girne.html
