I am seriously considering opening a fresh fish shop when i return to trnc in the very near future. I am well aware of the risks of opening this in cyprus but my wife (who is turkish cypriot) is very keen to retuen to the island and I even more perhaps. I am looking or some response from you all as to whether or not this is something you would like to see out there and if there is anyone with any information on the local fishing economy, (if there is one?)

I am aware of what is needed to start up my business but would love to have knowledge of what is on offer for all you fish lovers who yearn for for a real treat.

look forward to hearing from you and if you have any questions let me know

When I was unfortunate enough to live in the South there was a local (Cypriot/Brit) who opened a wet fish shop selling Cod, Haddock etc. He had it flown in from UK - expensive, but there was a demand.

@ msg 1, devonboy: Sir, prepare for a shocking but honest message. Don't do it, don't even think about it, your "fresh fish shop". The fish situation in the Eastern Mediterranean is disastrous. The popular fish tourists buy, eat and "enjoy" here are Levrek, Çipurra and some sad Voppa etc. Rubbish fish you wouldn't eat for free in the UK. Farmed in Turkish sea water (and who checked there for all the the known fish deceases?) - or you must know some local fisherman and buy from them.

I'll keep it short.

Shell fish situation in the Med. What shell fish situation?!

The waters around Cyprus are clear, great for diving, but not for fish.

I have caught Tuna (12 miles out) on the seasonal run.

There are several reasons for the lack of fish:

1. The nutrients etc. from the Atlantic don't wash this far up the Eastern Med.

2. Over fishing.

3. The Aswan Dam - severely reduced the nutrients flowing into the Med from the Nile.

Great diving venue because of this.

If you intend catering for Brits it has to be Cod/Haddock. Crabs/Muscles.

Or you could try Snook .

@ msg6, Mic k_the_Fish: (...) Cod/Haddock. (...)

▶ Mick, where can the gentleman from msg 1 buy FRESH Cod/Haddock? Hake? Whiting (20 years ago meant for cats and now developed into 'crab sticks)?

True enough, but a trawler from UK (about 2 left) goes out for several days - the catch is put on ice (but not frozen).

The fish I saw imported was in polystyrene boxes - perhaps extending the time since capture by 15 or so hours -

Pretty cold in an aircraft hold - then only 6 or 7 days to clear TRNC Customs.."......

You may e-mail me off board or Skype for free advice. No you can't, not enough posts! richardbgray@hotmail.com

1) Are you bilingual?

2) Enough money to BUY a shop, not rent?

3) Enough working capital to combine a 'wet-fish' outlet combined with a small working fish restaurant?

4) Enough money to work with the airlines landing daily produce from Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara etc?

Hope your new project goes well for you and will be happy to advise on your new venture foc.

All the supermarkets have fresh fish and Hur Deniz have several shops now and they specialize in fish so the market is already well covered. I think you will struggle.

Agree with msg 13 that the market is well covered from Catalkoy to Alsancak by HurDeniz. As already mentioned there are only 3 types of fish available here. We think that you will struggle to make a go of it so do plenty of market research before you decide.

Don't do it, you will lose a lot of money the population doesn't warrant the investment and your expenses will be phenomenal, much more than you think. Hur Deniuz have their own trawlers etc... The local fish shops who import from turkey arn't doing that well, and they cater for the locals who are not as skint as people try to make out !! I would think very very carefully before entering such a venture.

Agree with all the latter posts. HerDeniz really have the limited market sewn up here. It is also worth a mention that in Msg 5 DC has made an appalling spelling mistake! Fall on yer sword Dutch!

You can get most good fish and shellfish in Alphamega in the South.

So, I wish you every success. Buy from whoever supplies the South. Get an import licence and you'll make a fortune.

▶ I'm the first one to acknowledge that > my < spelling and grammar in the English language is far from faultless. Proposition: Let's continue in another language - your choice. I bet that your answer will be: "I will not post here for some time". (Same old, same old).

▶ Errrm, where you not the joker who spelled your education and the sad result as "intelectual". Don't try Google, because all alarm bells will ring.

▶ "HerDeniz"..?! Tsk. That's "Turklish"! The translation from Turkish (if spelled as 70-80 million Turks and a couple of Cypriot Turks do): "Free Sea" (Hür Deniz). Or "Mare librum". But thats Latin and only taught to people who didn't start to work after an education manqué.

▶ (...) Fall on yer sword Dutch! (...)

Yeah.

thanks for all your input and advise so far, the 'doom-mongers' as referred to in msg 18 seem loyal to hur deniz but I have had members of family and friends still in cyprus who say their range is limited, is this the case. I will continue to explore all options as I believe I can offer a wider range of fish to all. I also take on board the concern regarding expense and trust me, i wouldn't be considering this venture if I didn't have the resources.

I still look forward to all comments and advise, good or bad......

also what kind of fish would you all like to be able to buy that you currently can't???

The List would be endless,Apart from farmed Bass and Bronze Head bream ,Red Mullet and Grouper nothing else is readily available as FRESH FISH..........NO Crab, NO Lobster,NO Scallops,NO Mussels, I really don't know where you imagine the FRESH FISH would come from............the TRNC in terms of Fish Stocks is a Marine Desert.:(

Unlike this place

Dutch..... you really should get some therapy for that OCD. Anyway.... I know we really shouldn't laugh at the afflicted but in your case we all make an exception!.... your ranting is a marvellous amusement. Keep it up Hans! (and keep that spell checker on eh?).

And in response to your question, which European language would you prefer I converse with you in (other than Dutch which is a pretty naff language anyway). Your choice.

Msg 31

Spend sometime out in TRNC and look at what the 'competition' is doing/offering and do the opposite! Imported daily fresh shellfish attached to a small restaurant (little waste) will work and just do it, look at Belgo's! No point in asking questions for idea's knowing you'll just do what you had planned to do in the first place! Too many business's fail over here for that very reason, just copy their successful neighbours until the whole Street is filled with kebab shops and then all fail!

On a brighter note, I'd be very happy to help you (foc) to get your project off the ground; a retired chef!

msg 34 and 35, many many thanks for your positive response, Richard, your experience would be highly useful, I myself have over 10 years in the fishing business and as you quite rightly mentioned I will be opening regardless, I will be heading out in October for a business holiday when the summer season draws to a close and my fish mongering duties here in Cornwall can have a well earned break.

Dan, you have put a smile my face with your post, being able to purchase your catch would be of great benefit to me.

please feel free to mail me privately on dale6@live.co.uk if like Richard and Dan you are able to assist me in stting up in trnc or perhaps do some fishing and have products to sell.

Many thanks

hI Phil, I am in talks with my managing director about that, we buy in a lot of fish from turkey and I have also been in contact with them so I know that I can provide a much larger range than already available, if the feedback from family is anything to go by.

Some merit in suggesting that going into smoking fish would work well in TRNC due to hot weather conditions and shelf-life.

A Turkish Cypriot friend of ours brings us fish from his spear gun diving trips. Some are weird to look at but very tasty. He tells me the names in Turkish but unfortunately I forget them too quickly. Surely there are more people like him who have more than they need who would sell their excess to the guy in message 1 ?
