My understanding is that it is on the same terms as when the TRNC took electicity from the south following a major failure here in the north, that is for payment. I also heard but can not confirm that this agreement has actualy fallen through and that for some reason the RoC decided to not use electricity from the north, but I do not know if that is accurate or not. I do not that the deal detailed in the article above refers to the GC chamber of commerce being the buyer. This is the same issue mentioned perviopusly in terms of how could the RoC bill the TRNC for electricity without implicit recognition of the TRNC, but in reverse. My undersntading is that the deal was with the GC chamber of commerce, because that bypasses the issue of the TC electiricty company 'recognising' the RoC. Both the TC and GC chambers of commerce pre date both 74 and indeed 60 and can be and are used as means of 'bypassing' recognition issues.

A bit more info an links to news stories plus the rumour that the deal was stopped, which appears to be incorrect, if you can wade through the usual forum 'handbags' http://www.cyprus-forum.com/cyprus34916.html

Thanks Erolz, Surely the Greek Cypriots have to bite the bullet on this one,and accept the offer from Northern Cyprus. How would the rest of Europe view them if they put politics before the welfare of their people.I realise they ( Gc) refused the offer of water, from Turkey,a couple of years ago.But it seems to me that opinion seems to be changing towards the Greek cypriots stance on the Cyprob. And to refuse this offer, would be a no brainer, Paul.

I agree newlad and also just the fact that they offerd and gave such help to us when we needed it should mean accepting the same back now should not be an issue. Having said that it would seem that the RoC is getting alot of help from other places as well, with Israel providing generators already I believe and a number of other EU countries soon to do likewise, so how much they will need help and for how long from the TRNC remains to be seen. I also heard another unconfirmed rumour that there were plans to relax the green line regulations in terms of bringging accross 'small' generators from the north to the south, allowing upto two such items per person, but I do not know if this is true or not.

We offered the South electric the day the explosion took place, one of their ministers came over here and was going to sign the agreement but was called back to the south. They have now signed the agreement and we are going to supply them with electric until the end of august or longer if they need it. As for the generators, lefkosa are sold out and waiting for new supplies to come from turkey. Those that dont mind buying from the north got in first but after reading the cyprus mail today i am not surprised that some from the south are not happy about being supplied from here.

Let us put things into perspective. GCs supplied electricity to north and we refused to pay them anything. The argument at the time was that the south was receiving foreign aid on behalf of Cyprus and Denktash was asking them to deduct the cost of electricity and pay us the remaining part of our share. We had about 10-20 MW generating power at Dikmen based on gazoline which could come into service within minutes but too expensive to run. Only useful at peak hours. The GCs started making noises about cutting off our electricity and we in the north started to take precautions. We ordered a 60 MW generator and it was announcved at the time that it would be operational within six months. When the time came, July but can't remember which year, during commisioning the boiler blew up which meant a delay of six months. GCs cut off out electricity nevertheless because they said that they could not wait another six months. We had cuts of eight hours each day. I sold thousands of inverters ctd

Thanks, Ismet.... I remember reading in a" Rough guide to Cyprus" that during the inter-communical troubles of the sixties a sewage treatment works was in the north part of Nicosia and when GCs cut off the power, the TCs turned off the sewage plant.. !

ctd. just enough to run the lights and the telly off car batteries. They were hectic days and we as a community had really very hard times. It was mainly imposed on us deliberately by the GCs. Anyway, despite of what happened in the past, I am sorry for the people in the south. They are in real trouble because they are not used to deal with such situations e.g. life without A/C s. The cost of rebuilding is estimated at 2 billion Euros and they don't have the finances to meet it. The cost of delays on production and tourism is another matter. They shut down the desalination plants because they consume too much electricity. With no water, their tourism industry is in danger. The President may yet be forced to resign because of the inability of his government to forsee such a situation. They could hardly choose a worse place to place these dangerous containers i.e. very near the main power plant and a naval base. They did not want to buy electricity direct from Kib-tek, for ctd.

fear of recognition of TRNC. So they sent their NGO i.e. The Chamber of Trade and they signed an agreement with Kib-Tek. No problem, our people did not make a fuss because we did not want to score any political or trade points, simply wanted to help them and indirectly put them to shame for their past actions. At first the GC government refused because they wanted an agreement between the GC and TC Chamber of Commerce or Trade and not a direct agreement with Kib-Tek. HGowever they are in need of eery watt they can get and thus they quickly reversed their decision. I understand that we will supply them between 60-120 MW depending on local supply and demand at a cost of 0.43 TL /kwhs, a fair price and not a black market price! ismet
