Does anyone know if a temporary resident can cross border daily to work in south and remain living in the north?

Theoretical question to settle a point of debate with friends so no judgements just facts ta.

As long as they declare their income to the TRNC tax authorities.

That was my theory Geoff, thanks. I'd be guessing the tax implied would be extreme and dependable upon the border officials moods

I think you will find that you can only leave the TRNC for 90 days total annualy or else you have to restart your residency from scratch.

But to be certain ask the Immigration office.

How do the relevant tax regimes tax someone working in the 'south' but living in the 'north'

Surely it is the case that the TRNC authorities do not expect you to pay tax on overseas earnings, or that is my understanding of it. If, for instance, you work in Dubai and commute between there and TRNC you do not pay tax on your Dubai earnings. Why then would you have to pay tax here if your earnings are from the south? The issue of residency here is nothing whatsoever to do with it.

Earnings in south Cyprus do NOT count as overseas earnings - they are liable to TRNC tax and YOU are expected to declare it - just as you expected to declare earnings from rent here.

You need to be careful or you might be taxed by the authorities in BOTH sides of the Island.

Speak to an accountant for advice.

Message 11: I would like to see some official confirmation of this because, candidly, I cannot understand how this could work. Who in their right mind is going to declare such income and be taxed twice?? As far as I can understand it there is no co-operation between, say, the tax authorities on the two sides of the divide so where would be the evidence? The rental of property is a red herring because the tax authorities here have access, like the rest of us, to websites like Owners Direct and can, and do, look at bookings calendars on these sites to gauge the rental income. If you can confirm that the numerous building workers who are trotting across the border daily are paying tax Greek side and also here I would be fascinated!

I have been temporary resident in North Cyprus last 1,5 year working in southern Nicosia. Firstly - it is not easy to get residency permit if you are working in South. I suceeded as they supposed my job being interesting (I am embryologist). However, I had to declare that my assignment is only temporary and they gave me shorter permit than usual (just covering my assignment period). As about taxes - normal countries have got double tax treaties signed that assure that your income is taxed just once. North Cyprus obviously does not have any such a treaties so its position is bit different. However I have been told by immigration that as long as I pay tax in South my income is not going to be taxed here.
