I read mine in Cafe's! More comfortable than standing in Lemar and reading it w.H.Smith's style. But I must confess I sometimes do the same with other publications. But will take a look.

I think the Cyprus Today deserves to be fairly purchased or it will go out of business (even if it's not owned by Rupert Murdoch but Asil Nadir).

Blade re msg 2 You make a good point - but it will fall on selectively deaf eyes... Makarios publicly stated at the UN, he understood Turkey's actions and legitimacy.. At the time Cyprus wasn't being run by the elected govt. .. There'd be a military coup - organised from Greece by an unpopular Junta..

| |I am suitably ashamed! I don't buy what I write, and I leave the buying of other papers to my husband! he doesn't always purchase so.......................Yea I know that is a lame excuse, but allow me to be human! as to comment 10, you have a valid point which actually is valid for just about everything. 'If you don't use it, you lose it' could be 'if you don't purchase it you lose it'. seriously, I know how much all the publications rely on advertising, and they are all after the same ones - and sales, and if any of the punters out there want to continue to have papers, events, concerts, shops, restaurants, then if they don't support them they will disappear. so, I am off to buy my Cyprus today tomorrow. O.K? Am I forgiven. |

message 11: events of 37 years ago can be used to "explain" why the gc's felt no need to compromise ...either in 2004, or the talks 2008-2011 after all, imagining themselves the only injured party from the fall-out of sectarianism, they probably believe with right on their side they need give no quarter whether this is best from the point of view of their own interests we can only wonder at and as regards turkey being meant to go home... as you are aware they were happy to do so if the ethnic turkish community was secure but the situation in recent years though, seems to have hardened almost irretrievably, and as one with a deep understanding of the gc part of cyprus perhaps you would know better why they appear to indulge in throwing away opportunities as a kind of hobby

I prefer the Cyprus Observer to Cyprus Today, but it doesn't seem to be as readily available as it used to be, anyone know why? And I'm afraid I don't trust the comments of Stephen Day on the Cyprus Problem, but that's another story......

Msg13. states my feelings on the matter precisely. However Msg11. is making a valid point in part vis. Makarios at the time. However it is assuming far too much about what may have happened if the EOKA tendency took control of the "the levers". That aside, the perspective represented by Msg.11 is devoid of any experience in what it was like to live amongst the mixed communities at the time. I say this with the knowledge of one day hearing my own father being told by one of his GC friends in the police: "Why don't you get your family out of the village, very soon, not even a cat will be able to walk down this road!". It does look so much different without the black&white eye-glasses

message 19: as stated in earlier postings I have met a number of tc's disgusted with the present situation, and longing, apparently, for a return to the cyprus of earlier days however, the trends in voting patterns and current cynicism about re-unification prospects suggests that for the vast majority, while they may not like everything about the present setup there is nothing better on the table, as you would call it but the biggest problem I've had with this topic, outside of cyprus 44, is keeping people awake long enough to actually discuss the issue as regards turkey "meddling" it is a tad disingenuous to expect a powerful nation like that, not to act in various ways to secure the strategic interests of itself and its people, especially when it involves an island with which it has close cultural and geographical links and we both would agree it was the 1974 coup detat which gave turkey both the opportunity and a moral imperitive to do just that

Andre, Ethnic Turkish community? Are we talking Tc's or Turks? Being protected. As for the voting trends. When people live in an un democratic country where votes are purchased how can you take notice of that? Last election i watched a whole village change sides due to being offered more free gc land in the TRNC and with a drink and a kebab the deal was done. People don't vote for whats best for their country, they are voting with what they can gain, or the way mum or dad tells them to. Its not as simple as voting trends!

Hi message 14, thanks for the compliment re Cyprus Observer. there were a lot of good people working on it and it was published through Freebirds. It got sold to another owner two years ago since when it has met problem after problem and changed in so many ways. I worked for it for 4 years but as of a month ago it seems to have totally disappeared in spite of my trying to contact the Editor. Maybe it will resurface after the summer hols, but it has lost many of its faithful readers and virtually all of its english speaking staff and less copies are in circulatin when it comes out. I believe there is to be another new paper out soon, so watch the shelves. I can't say too much about it because I don't know, but....... As to Stephen Day's comments - well they are Stephens, and like all opinions are his opinions and are a basis for discussion. Out here it seems that many of us beg to differ with others - which adds colour! if not controversy.

blade message 21: the tc's and turkish settlers will gradually become less clearly differenciated, what with intermarriage, citizenship and the passage of time it is inevitable as regards you other comments, you seem to believe that the tc's don't really want a separate cyprus state, warts and all again, time will tell
