I am moving to North cyprus with my husband at the end of August. We have found this site very useful and thought you might help with advice, so if there is anything you thought I wish I knew that, or brought that with me we would be happy to hear. We plan to stay at a hotel for the first week, then we will need long term accomodation and to buy a car, set up internet etc.

Stay where you are unless you like endless amounts of red tape

Have you done your homework, a bit late to be asking questions now I should think. Have you got jobs with work permits, visited NC before? not much time in one week to get accommodation etc.,

Yes, I have a job and we have done lots of research. Just trying to decide what to take. I have worked in Abu Dhabi for 5 months so know all about red tape ! That doesn't worry me.

Any electrical items you can bring as they tend to be very expensive in NC. A microwave is a good example. If you intend to import household goods i.e. large items like your furniture, ensure you bring it all in one go (container) as you only get one chance of that and both your passports will be stamped to show you have imported same. Have several copies of your passports for the various formalities.

The best thing in my opinion you could bring would be a photo-copier. As you will have to triplicate every piece of paper you have ever needed. (passport, marriage licence etc.)

On a lighter note bring everything you can as what you don't need you can sell.

Good luck with the move.

Whilst accepting you have completed research; where is the faculty located, as this could affect housing location.

Type of housing wanted/children of school age?

Do you want new/2nd hand vehicle, what type, age etc?

Bring what you need to make the place your home, however, no firearms.

I regret but, the devil is in the detail and your initial query was too vague.

I suppose my inquiry is not to do with where to live, that will be decided when we get there and explored, also we do know we will need a car and we also recognise this is not a cheap option. I was looking for advice like the advice given by a couple of people about the cost of electrical appliances and also about only having one chance at importing your belongings.

If possible bring a car with you, under 5 years old,try to keep it around 1.6cc or maybe lower if that is not a issue for you,if one of you will not have residency then make sure the log book is in that name, have 12 month tax disk on the car, after 12 months you can pay the duty which on a small engine capacity car is very little,it would work out cheaper than buying a car here.Plus when you come to sell it,you will get a profit.

Hi Carol

I am also moving over( with my wife and 2 kids) to start teaching in September. We are moving to the Lapta area on August 8th to settle in and get stuck into paperwork etc. We are probably in the same position as yourselves in terms of preparing/researching/packing so that it all goes as smoothly as possible. If you would rather message off this forum then we are currently rebecca_shaw@sky.com.

Cheers

Pete Shaw
