Went to the Pia Bella Tuesday to see Johnny and the Jets, courtesy of Cheshire Home Charity. A very professional gig, the band was "tight", versatile, but with with a member from Right Said Fred, and the session drummer from Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell one would expect nothing less. Johnny was on form too, with a lot of new material, medley's and some excellent covers from UB40 etc etc They are currently playing hotels in the South and doing these charity gigs to help "The Home". If you like to see a good band perform live then I recommend you come along on Tuesday nights, the stage is set up with lighting gantry near the outside pool bar, no entrance fee other than to put something in the Charity collection bucket when it comes round. Drink prices are reasonable, cost me 18 tl for a round for 4 people. Best Regards TonyE

How is it, that bands like Johnny's, can come over from the south......along with all the other tribute acts, work., pay no tax, have no work permits, and then return to the south.????? I know its a charity event, but he and the band get expenses, which I feel probably cover their fee. Its just not fair !!! I would just like to say, I'm not knocking Johnny or his band (love them). Its just the system here.

Visiting artists are allowed to entertain as long as they are not residing in the North permanently or, in excess of the amount of time allowed by the appropriate TRNC authorities. They should be accounting for tax in their country of residence (in this case, the South) The venue accounts for taxes on profit from the gigs in the TRNC. The venues employing visiting 'big' names would normally, sell tickets for the shows and these tickets have to be authorised and stamped by the relevant TRNC authorities and the relevant taxes and KDV have to be paid (in advance, I believe) This, I presume, is in accordance with the rules and reg's of most other countries.

Agree with you Metin. This government are useless they have no idea what they are doing. All they have to do to make sure that they get tax from entertainers, is to make the bar/restaurant that book them pay them and deduct the tax then the Bar/restaurant could pay the tax to the government, on a monthly basis. Losing Emma Marie is just the beginning, the governments out here never seem to ensure they get taxes from almost any one. For example if someone buys property out here why not make them pay the kocan out of the first payments to the builders, that way the current government in power gets the money and can use it where needed. Instead the rules for kocan can make you wit indefinately before you get the kocan and you could of had a quite a few governments elected before anyone receives payments.

Thank you Groucho. Johnny does a lot of charity work with Cheshire Home, and is playing at the Pia Bella for the next few weeks. Because of the members going touring with their own bands you will not see them together for a few months after these performances. The supporting act kicked off about 9.15 Tuesday evening, and Johnny and the Jets were on around 9.45. They played one long set rather than 2 short ones. If you are interested in the muso's, the drummer (Charlie) is using a very fine Roland Electronic drum kit, mesh heads etc etc and his footwork is so fast that you could almost believe he has a double pedal. Some news, the Johnny and the band will be part of the Girne Festival-11 celebrations, and after the parade (led by the Ottoman Marching Band) on the afternoon of the 17 th Sept will play two sets during the evening, in the Belediysi Square. Best regards TonyE
