Too many politicians have made the "problem" a life times work and enjoyed the spoils of that work, dinner at the White House, tea at number 10, the best that Paris and Switzerland have to offer, why throw away a meal ticket like that just to go forward and become merely something akin to a british county councillor?

I first visited Turkey so many years ago. There were 18,000 old Lira to the pound. It thought going into "rich"Europe could solve it's difficulties. But Turkey has solved it's own problems. Now it has the financial muscle, military might, strategic importance to make the West notice. It is NOT a poor Muslim country any more. I've looked at the austerity measures Greece has to make.not a snowballs chance in Hell of meeting them!I see nothing but protracted strikes after protracted strikes for the Greek people. EU claiming they have an agreement,is like Chamberlain coming back, before the last war, with a piece of paper, saying "Peace in our time"...and a few months later....WAR This world is a tinder box, with the Middle East...Iran,Iraq,Afghanistan,Yemen,Libya and more. NATO,EEC,EU needs Turkey as a friend and as a base to try and keep order/peace in these places. Turkey has flexed it's muscles in the past few days re Cyprus. The next flexing of muscles .................

Dear MikeLapta Suggest you may need to read up on Turkey's economy https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/tu.html To flex one's financial muscles one has to have financial stability... Turkey MIGHT have to go cap in hand to the IMF - if Europe stays in the doldrums, economically - and WORSE - if Europe ended the Customs Union - due to any reneging by Turkey on agreements it has signed... Cyprus IS an issue and the issuing of 'ultimatums that will hurt TR (and TCs harder ) is not going to wash ....

mmmmmm, yes,I agree but it has made great strides in the past few years. I would rather have Turkey's balance sheet thanGreece,Italy,Ireland, and a few others What are your thoughts on Greece's austerity measures? I think that if Hitler had tried that in Germany in 1930's he would have been "booted"out
