Be careful and do your homework before buying one of these units. The hard water plays havoc, with parts and they need regular descaling. Also running costs, can be misleading, althought actual unit uses very little power, you need to run your pool pump for a lot longer than normal, to allow the system to generate the chlorine.

laptarunner is correct. All salt water chlorinators suffer with our hard water. The cell will need regular de-scaling. Running costs are also very high as the pump needs to run up to 12 hours a day in summer. For the above reasons we introduced the Aligator system to the TRNC. Their cells don't scale up and running hours are about half that of a chlorinator. http://www.aligator.co.uk

That's odd Vaughan, five or six years ago you were flogging them as fast as you could. I found out the hard way too, having to run the pump for 14 hours a day just to keep the chlorine level up to scratch. I estimated that it cost me 400 TL per month just to run the watermaid. As you can imagine it has lain idle for some years now. If Woody (message 1), wants it, he can have it for nothing as long as he disconnects and carries it away.

pc4854, You are quite right. We did introduce Watermaids to the island and, at the time, electricity was a 1/3rd of the price it is now. That's one of the main reasons we stopped promoting them. Watermaid doesn't dictate the price of electricity here, Kib Tek does. Aligators, on the other hand use about half the electricity of a Watermaid or similar chlorinator. I'm sure someone will take you up on the offer as cells are always in demand.

Ralph96 msg7 Give zerochlor a try for 1 month,if you do not like it,change back to chlorine. No need to use the pump any more than normal. Nothing to change in the pump room. No great big expense on set up costs. Have a look on the website. http://www.zerochlor.co.uk Happy chlorine free swimming folks

Oh dear Vaughan your memory is playing tricks, you stopped promoting the Watermaid because the company dispensed with your services!

Vaughan, We are in the biggest recession of our life times. With that comes huge inflation. Your claim that you stoped promoting the watermaid because of electric costs inflating and now promote the Aligator which uses half the electric. Can you not see that within a couple of years the Aligator will become another £800 worthless toy due to more inflation?

msg 12, ".....Can you not see that within a couple of years...." In the future cars will be much more efficient and petrol will cost much more, but it hasn't stopped us buying cars which we expect to still be driving in 10 years time.

msg 12 The pump when using the Aligator system is on for the same time as a chlorine pool. The electric cost is the same. I put the Aligator system in nearly 4 years ago now and it has more then paid for itself. The chlorine usage is minimal and because I do not have to worry about getting chemical balances correct I can clean the pool myself. System is extremely cost effective.

BillyB, The Watermaid needs 12 hours per day in summer. The pool perhaps only needs 6 hours per day, so the pump runs an extra 6 hours just to service the Watermaids needs. An Aligator only needs about 6 hours per day in summer so the pump running at the same 6 hours needs no extra running. The Aligator has a very low power consumption and its own running cost is negligible.

Vaughan, Just as a matter of interest, cause I'm not going to buy one but how much is the total cost of the Aligator system, installed and working? Just a rough guide will do, in case I change my mind.

pc4854, An Aligator, supplied and fitted, costs 1150 sterling. We will soon be importing the Aligators little brother, the Aquasprite, which is suitable for pools up to 55,000 litres, i.e. an 8x4m overflow pool. Price of the Aquasprite TBA, but it will be about half the price of the Aligator. http://aquasprite.com/index.cfm

Message 15 - I agree entirely. I have an Aligator System also and I am very pleased with it. Easy to clean myself, low maintanance and better quality water. If you need any backup, Vaughan is very obliging and always helpful. I fully recommend this system.

http://www.aligator.com/aqua-parks.php If the Aligator system can handle these guys taking a dump in their pool without harming them, I'm sure it will work in your pool.
