according to the paper "kibris" the foreign office of the russian foreign ministry

has invited kudret ozersay, trnc special representative, for talks



this is highly significant, though probably more so for the future than today



south cyprus is non-aligned (not a member of nato) and a close relationship with

russia is something their present leadership has sought to nurture



the invitation may be seen in the context of russia-turkey's burgeoning trade partnership

but it also means that the eurasian power is now willing to hear our side of the story

it is good news for the north and must be a warning sign to the pampered

Without recognition, how can Kudret Ozersay, special representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, be invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation? He wasn't invited in a personal way but in a political capacity.

Since when has a "pseudo politician" from a "pseudo state" been invited to Moscow?

(Inverted commas are GCs, not mine!)



I'm sure mmmmmmmm would have a view on this.

There are many Russians who holiday in Turkey and an increasing number who are deciding to come to the TRNC. This is a great opportunity for both Russia and the TRNC develop relations.



The Turkish Cypriot community did vote for the Annan Plan, international peace plan, and the European Union failed its obligations to implement the direct trade regulation. Not very promising European Union then.

The Russian's are seeking recognition for 2 separatist 'states in their sphere of influence and have previously make it clear that they might think about recognition of 'TRNC' if they don't get their way..



Russia is also keen to be the 'middle man' re Libya...



If a TC representative also gets a call to visit Beijing, the 'rump' RoC WOULD get nervous...



There is no doubting that Russia has noted that the TCs did vote YES to Annan..

the odd thing about the workaday russia-turkey relationship is that throughout

history the countries bitterly competed with each other..battling in several wars



but sometimes states can come together when the dust and borders are stable

...and suddenly find they have many common objectives



think of france and germany who struggled for a hundred years or more,

but then jointly inspired the european common market, predesessor to the eu



russia has always placed a high value on neighbouring buffer states that are

not aligned with enemies and putin's regime in particular has been trying very

hard to undercut unquestioning american leadership of much of the world



the russian dictator stalin in particular had a good understanding with attaturk

...both countries overcame foreign interventions around 1920

Quite. It could be something as 'trivial' as money laundering - it is something that Russia was doing successfully in RoC, until the EU spoiled their fun a little bit.

So maybe they are looking for pastures nouveaux .

The most normal way round such issue of 'implied recognition' is that TC officals visit in their capacity as representatives of the TC community as per the 1960 consitution and not as represenatives of the TRNC. Really Cyprus and those in it all to often get obsessed with this whole issue of 'does it imply recongition' etc etc to such a point that it hinders the practical ability to get anything positive and constuctive done.

just like that trillion dollar-western firm uses offshore locations for its

breakaway statelets ...just the same I cannot see recognition any time soon, after all, georgia

and moldova could some day in the far future figure for eu accession,

assuming the eu survives its currency crisis, the patient having made a remarkable recovery



but events do often unfold in unexpected ways...and we all say it was "inevitable"



any road, the brits will have to "share" ex-pat cyprus one way or the other:

a reduction in sovereign base territory and/or personnel, the favourable no-visa regime in the north

and somebody, just about anybody per-leeeez, to buy up unwanted property...push in that direction
