Technically Vaughan was right;

The first day of Ramadan is not a public holiday.

However Social Resistance (Whatever that is) day is.

This says that Social Resistance Day is: Anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Resistance Organization

Social Resistance Day.

On the 1st April, 1955, EOKA began its terrorist activities (A date that is celebrated with a public holiday in south Cyprus). After that date, there was constant tension between the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority.

In early 1958, the Turkish Resistance Movement (TMT) was founded. This was in answer to EOKA whose aim was Enosis, or unification with Greece. TMT organised a boycott of Greek Cypriot products and shops, in the same way that EOKA was presiding over a Greek Cypriot boycott of British products. This day commemorates the founding of TMT, and there is usually a folklore festival in Nicosia and other major towns.

The information in Wikipedia is watered down and is misleading because of GC contributions (as always).

1st April 1955 the Greek EOKA was formed, under the pretense of fighting against British Colonialism and the British army. The main aim, as accepted by subsequent GC leadership, was to unite the island with Greece, and erase Turkish presence by attacking the TCs. They did both, by shooting and bombing many British soldiers & their families as well as attacking TCs.

In 1956 two main TC resistance groups, VOLKAN and 9th SEPTEMBER (against EOKA), were formed. However, these were effective in the Mağusa area, and lacked the organizational structure or the strength to take counter measures against the EOKA anywhere else. My father who was at the same time a ranking offider in the British Poılice force was a founder member, with Ismail Sadıkoğlu, Burhan Nalbantoğlu and few others - Denktash was not in the picture until later. My father had to stand behind the scenes because he could not be an officer in the British army and a VOLKAN member at the same time. He was going to be far more useful as a captain in the police force, as was the case later on, when he destroyed all records/evidence police had against Doktor Küçük (This was when Makarios was exiled, and Doktor Küçük was going to meet the same faith if proven guilty).

TMT was formed as an extension of Volkan, out of need for a major organization that could be effective all over the island by Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu, Rauf R.Denktaş ve Turkish Embassy's administration attache Kemal Tanseverdi on 17 October 1957. Dr. Küçük THE TRUE leader of the TC resistance against EOKA and the British coolonial administration, was also in the background, because he was to be the public political leader as well as the owner of the Halkın Sesi Newspaper (founded 1941) which fearlessly wrote news articles concerning the TC. Denktaş as a solicitor was more of a legal adviser. Hence, 2 January 1958, Dr. Küçük'ü and Rauf R.Denktaş'ın were called to Ankara for a very long meeting. It was agreed then that Turkey would support TMT with specialist officers, training and arms.

There was to be a meeting of the Baghdat Pact in Ankara, between 28-30 January, of which both Turkey and Britain were members. To maker their voice heard the Turkish Cypriots held meetings in Mağusa, Larnaka, Limasol and Lefkoşa. They demanded TAKSİM (sharing of the island by Greeks and Turks). The British soldiers took action and 7 TCs were shot dead in the ensuing scuffle.

During late May 1958, A centre for establishing a proper TMT organisation was set up in Ankara. Subsequently, a military leader code named Bayraktar (Mr Rıza Vuruşkan) was appointed for the first time as the leader of the military activities of TMT. THIS DATE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FORMATION OF TMT! 1st of August was made a

It should read; 1st of August was made a national holiday by legislation - against many opposition voices in the Assembly. It was another a**e licking tactic by the ruling party at the time to please mainland Turkey. The 1st (on 1st August 1958) and the ensuing "Bayraktars" were all ranking officers from Turkey.

It is also wrongly cited by many sites on the net that "TMT was founded by Denktaş and Turkish military officer Rıza Vuruşkan in 1958". Complete and utter nıonsense!
