Ah yes, remember 1999 well, those were the days when you drove to Lefkosa on the single track road and if you saw a couple of vehicles, that was busy!

We first visited in 1996 and stayed in a wonderful villa that is now Patina restaurant! Obviously it was much quieter, there was virtually nothing to the West of Kyrenia. There was two-way traffic down Kyrenia high street and a road going round the fountain where the cafes are at the top (Windows Bar etc). The only way into Kyrenia was over the mountain into Catalkoy and you had to negotiate a load of oil drums in the road by the army camp as you turn off the Ercan-Lefkosa road to head towards Kyrenia. There were no roundabouts in Kyrenia and only one set of traffic lights (the Bellapais lights).

That depends on personal preference, I preferred it how it used to be, although some things have changed for the better. Unfortunately change is inevitable in a country like this and not always for the best I am afraid. Its cheaper than the South but is alot more expensive than it used to be, obviously.

Better roads which unfortunately have encouraged road racers but travelling times between towns much reduced but not so much fun. The coastline has been spoilt by housing developments much of which are empty and probably always will be and there are lots of little "eyesore"developments dotted about which have been left unfinished and give the place an air of neglect. The locals have always been lovely people but I can see a gradual change - particularly in the younger men and women. There is also a growth in finger clicking waiter baiters - usually "London Turks" who ponce about in large 4 drives and think they own the place. Problem is they probably do but they and their bimbo wives can easily spoil a visit to a restaurant and in our case it was Niazis.

Has it Changed?......Yes..........Is it cheap?...........Compared to what? If you are looking for a place with Cheaply Built Houses, High Levels of corruption and little or no Governance, then this is the place for you ......... It obviously appeals to some..

Message 22..Hector.. yes there was the little problem then, put into context with the amount of people residing back then it was probably just as bad as it is now.

Hi All, I moved back to the UK over 2months ago after an "up and down" time in Cyprus. We've moved to a new part of the UK(I never been too) but already feels more like home than I ever felt during our 12months in NC...Had options of 3 or 4 amazing schools for the kids and salaries that are in line with the price of living....i could finally afford to go to a supermarket(Sainsburys) and feed the kids anything they wanted and at half the cost....no power cuts, boardband that works, no water shortage, a local doctor that will see me within 24hours at no cost. For many months I kept saying to myself, Cyprus really cant be as bad as how it was feeling, now back in the UK..for me it really was. Might have been different if my kids were grown up but for what we needed as a "family"...it just doesnt compete!...even with the odd riot going on!;) We really wanted to make NC home and gave it our best but sadly NC cant hold up its end of the deal! I wish you all, the very best wishes
