You do not need a blood test if you are 60 or over. Indeed you do not any longer need residency if you are sixty or over. However, if you do not have residency there a some things you can not do. eg. You can not have a driving license. So, on balance it is probably better to have residency anyway.

I think I'll give the next blood donation day a miss then I would have thought that if my blood is good enough to be given to someone it should be ok for residency

Hi John, would it still be possible to use an international driving licence, if I did not bother with the residency ?

TopTen. Do you give your blood in a different place than where you go to have a blood test for residency? if there is no communication between the two then that would be the reason for having to have a blood test as well as giving the blood.

I think you can only use the international driving licence while you are here on holiday so i am guessing three months like your visa. If you live here you need a TRNC licence otherwise your insurance will be invalid in the event of an accident.

I find it rather sad that people will stop donating blood because they have to pay for a blood test. Let's hope not everyone has the same opinion and that you don't require blood one day and there's none to be had! It is frustrating I know, I have given blood and platelets all through the nine years I have lived here and I would rather not have to pay to have a blood test to gain residency, however, the fact that I do would never stop me donating, the people that receive the blood aren't the ones making the laws, so why shoudl they suffer!

But the other down side is that if I ever do need blood I would have to find that blood myself, and its not about the cost its the messing about that goes with it

Tasgirl The way it was explained to me, I think blade is right. After three months you need a TRNC license. I don't think you can get round that by going into the "South" or whatever. Topten I would have thought there was no connection at all between giving blood and having a blood test for residency.

Message 10 - I agree - it would not stop me donating, doing that sounds rather petty and immature!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the BRS had approached the government about this very issue and asked if it was possible for blood donors to be exempt from having to have the blood test. Not seen anything from the BRS with regards to an answer. I guess it was a no no. B

Msg 11 - if you donate and have one of the blood donor cards, you do not have to find blood should you need it, that's one of the advantages of giving blood. Msg 14 - the BRS are looking into this, but as it isn't just a blood test that is required the authorities are having difficulty finding a way of organising it - nothing new there!
