Any ideas as to why my cold water roof tank is constantly overflowing????.

Have already dropped the water level in the tank a little to change the ballcock and checked it. no problems when switched pump on or so i thought. went back next day but overflowing again . Realised pump downstairs is more or less permanently running!. Is it possible for the outlet from the cold water roof tank to be faulty .It has a non-return valve on it . Ie ....is it possible the outlet is returning back into the tank back through this valve?

If not then anyone any ideas.

many thanks . very frustrated!

We had same problem and there were two answers. Pump constantly on because of a minute (small!!) flow of water in one of the loos. Hence water being continually pumped to water tank on roof, hence the water was flowing out of the overflow safety holes in the screw top "lid". It should have been stopped by the ball cock working correctly but when the plumber went up there, he found tiny little bits of calcium had built up in the angle of the ball cock bracker and stopped it from working as it should.

Apparently this build up of calcium deposits is a common fault because of the mains water we are supplied with here.

Ok..... now all fine after changing the non-return valve although a pig to do as trying to remove the old one after 6yrs on caused vthe stop cock valve to sheer off !!!. then had to stick a broom handle in the water tank hole to stop the flooding. Then had to cut the pipework down as the new parts were bigger than the old so welding was involved (plastic).....Next time its a plumber for me and will stick to what i know!
