My friend in lapta has just had such system installed and I must admit the choice of channels and quality of picture is excellent.

My husband says such a system is not legal over here but I have seen several adverts from companies offering such systems. My response was if you can't beat them join them. Tomorrow we will speak together with Sky and get the definitive answer on if these companies are authorised to provide Sky in the TRNC ;) now when is the next cancer charity meeting ?

Is there a relevance to a cancer charity meeting and Sky TV?

it is not an issue of legality per se for users of Sky in Cyprus. It is an issue of being in breach of Sky's terms and conditions. It is an issue of potential risk of loss. As things currently stand Sky do not have the rights to proivde their service in Cypurs. As long as sky remain unware that a given set top box is being used in Cyprus then the user should not have problems. If sky do become aware that a user is using the service in Cyprus, they will cut that service off. Therefore there is a potential risk to users of such services. One way of minimising the risk is to pay monthly for service and not yearly. The issue with Sky is further confused right now as there is a pending EU test case that may make both the sky terms and conditions that limit access based on region within the EU invalid and also make the existing deals sky has signed with content owners invalid. This only applies to EU based services provided within the EU but outside the area the broadcaster has rights for.

This need for Sky users to 'hide' their real location from Sky, because using it in Cyprus is in breach of their terms and conditions, means certain services and features offered by sky can not easily be used in Cyprus, namely those that require a phone line connection, as this will give away the true location and lead to the service being disconnected.

These aspects of using Sky in Cyprus are nothing to do with the status of the TRNC as a non recognised state. They apply equally and in exactly the same way to users in the recognised RoC as they do to users in the North.
