Good for them, if there is one thing that should be abused as a political football it's education. Unfortunately the authorities in the south are only all too willing to proceed along political lines with education. Anti-Turkish propaganda is institutionalised in both the state and private education sector in the south.

"Anti-Turkish propaganda is institutionalised in both the state and private education sector in the south." I'm not certain that is so true at the schools themselves Groucho - at both the Senior School and the English School they employ Turkish Cypriot teachers and have a sizeable proportion of TC pupils - there is indeed opposition to this from some quarters of GC society, but the board/governors at least at these two schools have had the foresight to resist this pressure.

In message 3, I wrote that "at both the Senior School and the English School they have a sizeable proportion of TC pupils" - That however will change with the Turkish Universities now accepting students on the basis of their A level results attained here in the north ... but not in the south. This will innevitably improve the teaching of A levels in north-side schools ... for the non-Turkish-speaking students as well. This is a matter that all KKTC-based parents of secondary-school-age pupils should be made aware of and thus I feel should be the subject of its own thread ...

Why did the south's Headteacher's Association threaten to strike if the Education Ministry proceeded with their intention to better reflect the true goings on during the period 1960 - 1974? This confrontation which led to a backing-down by the minister was first reported in the south's press not the north's. Why did the TC daughter of an acquaintance have to sit through an entire day of anti-Turkish propaganda coinciding with Turkish Republic Day at a private school in the south? Crumpy, I know you have the best intentions but these things do raise questions about the south's educational standards and how ingrained the bias is.

What a lot of time and effort wasted. How much better that could have been employed, maybe by helping people. Or even addressing the issue of what to do with the dangerous containers!! Then lives would have been saved

Re ; msg 5 Groucho, there is certainly "ingrained bias" in many quarters of GC society, but I felt this was less so in the educational system - I well remember reading a report of an incident that occured just outside the gate of the English School, whereby some GC students (from the school) defended their TC classmates from some GC youths from outside of the school. However, maybe this mentality only exists in the south-side schools with a strong British influence.

More importantly Groucho, will your TC friend's daughter continue attending the school in the south? - From this year onwards many non-internatioinal schools in northern Cyprus will be preparing students just for A levels (ie. not for ÖSS), because Turkish universities are to accept students according to their A Level results. Without the distraction of ÖSS, the education for IGCSE/A Level here will innevitably improve. One of the reasons for allowing A Level "graduates" to attend Turkish Universities is to stop TC parents sending their children to the south-side schools. This is will be achieved by not allowing TC graduates of GC schools from attending Turkish universities. As I wrote in message 4, this matter has ramifications for the education of non-Turkish-speaking pupils in the north ... and maybe should be the subject of its own thread. That said, one has to tread carefully on this matter, so as not to upset the owners of any internatiuonal schools here in the north ...
