If I hire a car in the south Larnaca and drive to TRNC for a few days sight seeing will I be able to carry on through the border without any hassle in a "z" car. Do I tell my hire company in the south that I am heading to TRNC? Is it worth taking the risk? Will my boot be searched? What is the border procedure now? I realise that this question has probably been asked on the forum a million times but I just need someone out there to provide me with some sound advice. I had thought about parking my car in Nicosia and walking across and getting a taxi at Girne?

Hi, Not all rental companies in the South allow you to bring a vehicle to the TRNC. Best to clarify in advance. You must buy insurance after you have crossed to be covered in the TRNC. There is one company that covers both sides. Check the 'Car Hire' heading on the Forum. DD

Hi we have done this quite a few times. As the previous message said, hardly any southern rental companies allow you to go to the north and even if they do, they wash their hands of any breakdown you have whilst in the north. So check their terms and conditions before hiring. If you are a careful driver it is not usually too much of a problem. When you get to the border you need to buy additional insurance for the time you are in the North. (usually about 30TL) They do not search the car or anything, (there is usually a queue for the insurance and the guys never leave their office), however there is the remote chance that on returning to the south, the Greeks at the border may ask to search your car, but we have never had a issue if you look like regular holiday makers. hope this helps.

We have used Andys Motors. They text to say where car is parked at airport (Larnaca) . We get the extra insurance at the Mwtahan crossing 25 € plus 5 € for each additional driver. This provides a months insurance. Word of warning!!! I collected friends from a late arrival and, when we arrived at Metahab crossing ( approx 2:30AM), the car insurance both was closed. I already had the insurance just could add my friend on.

Just tell the company that you are planning to go North and will it be a problem and the answer will be no problem. Their web sites say that you cannot go north but nowadays its fine.

I agree with msg 4 - go with Cyprus Car (Fontana). You book online, get a reservation number, and get met at the airport with someone carrying a board with your name on. You show your licence and passport, fill in a form, pay your money, and drive away, quick and no fuss. And you can bring the car north providing you buy third party cover at the Green Line crossing. If the car breaks down in the north, you have to get it recovered back to the South, but their cars are usually pretty good quality in my experience. Last time I was in the TRNC some people said that car hire was cheaper in the north, it is BUT...if you're flying into Larnaka you need to factor in the cost of the taxi to and from your hire car office in the north, and when you do that Fontana works out cheaper, and its easier. Also if you want to explore the whole island, it is much simpler if you have a hire car from the south.

I met a couple the other week who hired a car from a South side car hire company. They purchased 3rd party insurance at the border available for South side hire cars. They proceeded with their journey into the North. They unfortunately had an accident, thankfully they were unhurt and not negligent. They had to hire a car from the North as the South side company did not give a replacement car. They spent 10 days of their holiday going from garage to garage trying to help get the car fixed because the South side company did not give a maintenance service or support. I could not believe they even had to try and find parts to speed up the repair. I think it is better to hire a car from a Northern based company if you wish to drive in the North as you have full comprehensive insurance and the support of the hire car company should anything happen.

Hi Shebat, Most if not all hire companies do not allow you to travel to the north when hired in the South. I notice that someone used Andy's car hire and they said you could obtain insurance at the border, this is not what they told me. By not reading the small print (I was holidaying in the North), they refused to return my £150 deposit having advised me that their cars could not be used in the North as the insurance was not valid. They did say that I could take a chance (without insurance!) but that I would be responsible - some chance of me doing that. Whatever you decide, dodge Andy's Car Hire.
