Its official folks. The life in the TRNC is better than UK. We have just had a BBC poll and 89% of those voted to remove the Human Rights act. You guys live in the land that is ahead that never bothered with such acts. So all you moaning minis stop moaning and just enjoy TRNC as UK will be joining her soon in her Human Rightless nature. Sorry could not resist this one.

The reality is Yfred that the UK could remove all its national legislation on human rights yet it would still be subject to the ECHR and its jursidiction unless it was to leave the CoE, which would probably require it to leave the EU as well. The same goes for the TRNC / Turkey. Turkey is a member of the CoE and has agreed to the jurisdiction of the ECHR and in turn the ECHR has deemed Turkey the responsible party for becahes of the ECHR acts in the TRNC. The only way to reverse this would be for Turtkey to leave the CoE. In effect both the UK and Turkey and indeed all members of the CoE have already agreed to give up sovriegnty on matters relating to human rights. They can not now say, actualy we want that sovreignty back, without serious repercussions.

Erol, We were excluded from the Social chapter for years by the Conservative (Major) Government, I think the EU allowes countries to withdraw from which ever legislation they feel does not suit them. BTW thanks for joining us that evening at the harbour. Glad to have finally met you and everyone else.

Yfred, you can as a EU member state in certain cirumstances gain exceptions for certain EU legislation, but you can not do so re the ECHR charters, which are not a part of the EU but of an entirely different body, the CoE. All members of the CoE are bound by the ECHR acts and the jurisdiction of the ECHR itself and the only way to 'get out' of that is to leave the CoE itself. If you are a member of the CoE then as a state you have agreed to bound by the ECHR chartes and the jurisdiction of the ECHR (the court) and there are no exepctions.

It gets a bit worrying when the Prime Minister of a country talks as he does. Considering he is from Eton, perhaps he hadn't had his wheetabix yet. For a while I thought we were Frazered (Doomed).
