I have just returned from the vet as our little Cyprus Terrier has just started in the last two days obtained a small bug infestation. (very small black bugs) We were informed that it's a new variety of Ticks becoming more widespread this year.

Apparently frontline and fipronex is of no use. We were given a collar for her to wear (Paraband)

Has any one else come across this and do you have any remedies.

One of my cats has something unusual. Especially round the head and neck, you can feel a small bump in the skin. If you use a fingernail you can pull it out (leaves a tiny wound) and it always comes out with a small quantity of fur. Looks like a small flake of skin with the fur attached. Last year both cats had it, this year only one, so far. Any ideas what it might be?

Daisy your description seems to be spot on!

A day later with this new collar and we can see no evidence of them. I'll have to wait and see if they stay away.

Vonny...I'm not too sure...however, my dogs rarely get tics...and they do take a swim in the sea....so very possibly.

My dog was invested with these nasty buggers-I was able to kill them off by using a "Frontline Spray"

Cost 50tl from your local chemist.

It was a very along process but it did work..

Hope this helps.

I must say, that when i 'frontline' my dogs, i tend to use the dropper which is about 30tl...however if your pet is infested, a spray frontline is much more effective at getting rid of the blighters!! But a thorough bathing is recommended first....

One thing to remember, if they get in your House, they will also feed on you......It's Blood they want and are not particularly concerned with it's origin.

Are they tics or a type of flea? Tics are very difficult to remove without a tool and generally should not be an infestation as the animal normally picks them up on walks through grass etc where they have come off other animals. If they are tics and attach to humans they can cause lymes disease.

You can google removal of tics but the key is do not distress them otherwise they regurgitate fluids into the victim which is what causes the damage. i.e. do not burn them off etc. We have a tic removal tool which you can make by making a small cut in a credit card or loyalty card and then passing between tic and skin. If I were to get one on me here in the U.K. I would go to the hospital for antibiotics, a friend had a very bad reaction when he got one on him.

My dog had these last year, but there isn't just a couple here and there, there are hundreds of the things. I thought my dog had cut itself as there was blood all over the floor, but later discovered it was me standing on them. Pertev the vet said the only way to get rid is for the dog to have an injection.

Oh what a fantasTIC thread!

I thought the paraband collars were for white fly and the nasty disease (which I am too tired to try to spell!) they carry. Then I was told by another Vet that the paraband doesnt work in Cyprus anyway because the heat negates it.

Sometimes you just dont know what to do or believe I should be glad to hear from anyone who has an expert opinion or experience.

I believe Med sea water is beneficial for deterring parasites in both dogs and humans, but I have never been able to test the former because my dogs do a King Canute and just bark at the waves and tell them to go away!

My Cyprus Terrier was infested with these, both last year and this year. Frontline didn't appear to work, (I thought he'd become immune to it), but the collar, seems to work at the moment.

Hundreds of them.......in his coat, horrible things. But my other dog never got them.

Frontline your dog monthly. Use the correct dose for your dogs weight. If frontline is failing you then alternate it with another product.

Keep a Paraband collar on your dogs as well, renew it ever three months..

Worm your dogs every three months.

Vaccinate your dog yearly.

Train your dog.

Feed ,water and love your dog then it will be fine.

If you can't do that then don't get a dog in the first place!

My 2 dogs tics were problemaTIC but I was pragmaTIC, not pessimisTIC or neuroTIC about the matter. I looked at the logisTICS of the situation and covered the dogs all over with loads of anticepTIC and antibioTICS. It sounds a bit sadisTIC and even cannibalisTIC and the dogs did look somewhat idioTIC. But I had faith even though I'm an agnosTIC. It didn't work.....back to the elasTIC collars!!!

To Blade's message, can I add:

Groom your dog regularly, and clip it in summer - particularly if it is a Cyprus terrier - but not too much as dogs can sunburn. This will help you catch insect infestations early and will help "bonding" with the animal. But only bathe it twice a year (unless it rolls in something nasty of course) so as not to strip natural oils. If you have Rosemary and/or Lavendar in your garden rub it into your dogs coat - it is said to deter parasites and anyway smells nice! (though the dog might not think so)

Register your dog - in Girne (not sure about other municipalities ) they will give you a disc for its collar which indicates to the Police that it is a pet and not a stray which might be shot in a cull.

Keep a record of your dog's vet treatment (vaccinations, worming etc). AND DO NOT LOSE IT If you need to Board it you will need it for kennels, and if - heaven forbid - you have to ask someone else to take it over they will need it. cont..........

It is quite unreasonable to ask someone else to take responsibility for your dog , if you cannnot even tell them when it is due for its next tablet or visit to the vet - I know I have just had that experience and have been caused me a lot of wasted time and grief in return for my kindness in adopting the animal.

Be particularly conscientious about worming - there is one worm which can cause blindness in children if they handle the excrement. You should of course not let that happen - but dogs and children being what they are - it is best to be safe and ensure the dogs is regularly dosed.

And with regard to Blade's last paragraph, be a good friend and neighbour, People who adopt dogs in good faith should not be detered by fear that they will be unable to care for the animal if they are ill themselves even temporarily and cant, for instance get to the Vet - help out if someone is in trouble and maybe some time they will repay the favour.

Worming is my main moan at the moment, we are seeing far too many dogs with worms. It is the summer and there are flies thats all it takes.

If you see something which looks like white string or rice grains in your dog muck then your dog has worms. Clean up behind your dog straight after it has been to the loo, then you will have the best chance of spotting it.

I am guessing i need to explain in in detail as soo many dogs have it right now. The cure / prevention is a tablet from the chemist, you need to know the weight of your dog to get the correct dose. Its not expensive and will prevent both your dog and yourself from illness.

Yes you can catch worms from your dog!

Worm your dogs every three months don't just wait until the local gov calls you in once per year.

Normally, a few drops of acetone directly on the tick will make a tick 'pull its head in', so it can be picked off without leaving its proboscis [blood-sucking tongue] still embedded in the animal's flesh. Unless the tick comes away easily, it will be necessary to re-apply a few more drops. Acetone will not, generally, cause skin problems in dogs and pussycats!

With regard to tics I personally find the a Paraband collar is better than Front line because by and large Front line is for fleas and tics but not for sand flies, which can pass on Leisch, and is horrible. The hundreds of "little tics" was probably baby tics and usually gather around the neck area, hence having the Paraband permanently in that area is a deterrent. However, in the small print on the container of a new Paraband collar it clearly says "this collar must not get wet (or words to that affect, so if you have a dog that spends time in your pool, then its effect will be lost. Remember if you dog does go into your pool, then it takes its infestation into the pool with it!!!!!
