So, I've been reading up about this drilling issue and Turkey claims that it has a right to "forestall" all activities in the Cypriot economic exclusion zone. Turkey has so far taken action against a Norwegian survey vessel before, so my question is..... What are the predictions? What do you guys think will happen on the 1st of Oct?

Msg #2 Only problem here is that the only companies that would sign agreements to drill would be Turkish companies, very small fish in the industry. Even then, they couldn't progress because all the rig owners are companies from the recognised world, as are the service providers, and they would not breach UN/EU rulings. Thus, Turkey will not be exploring the areas around Cyprus themselves.

The exploratory drilling will go ahead albeit with Turkish resistance. If there is a commercial find then that's where the real "fun" starts. The law is not as clear as some would like and Turkey will challenge this in the international courts thus holding up the whole thing for years. No quick fix ! Overlaying this of course is the Turkish aid flotilla protection force. Now that might be a real humdinger !

Geejay You are confusing the RoC's RIGHT to drill, with Turkey's continued stance that the RoC should not be recognised... there is NOTHING ( legally ) to stop the drilling and TR would be deemed t be breaking the law... A find worthy of development would spice things up and probably be a spur towards a deal whereby all Cypriots benefit..

I think mark is making a valid point: annoyance is understandable, but if turkey chooses to seriously interefere they could all too easily get ensnared in international legal processes on the other hand the greek cypriot regime for all its bluster must now be wondering whoever would come to their aid if the going gets rough on site a really significant find may bolster "all cypriots" but only if nicosia is willing to share the spoils rather than selling the gas, but do we think they would? a good solution would come after a great deal of argy-bargy: without a global agreement between all states on the use of the area, de-facto zones are hacked out of the seaboard of cyprus with turkey's navy as the guarantor of their legitimate interests....whatever they are

re msg 9 >>a really significant find may bolster "all cypriots" but only if nicosia is willing << YES.. how could they not .. ? and have ANY international support? TCs are citizens of the RoC .. that is their contention

the island of cyprus i assume is historically owned by both turkish and greek cypriots as is the waters that surround it,how on earth one side can sign an agreement completely ignoring the other sides interests is quite unbelievable really! Its a shame, These talks for peace/settlement will fail, its as simple as that.

Sporty you are absolutely right,.. its just the same as joining the EU without a TC vote on it. The ROC will continue to do as it pleases and disregard what TC,s need or want. Unified Island my ass

mmmmm with due respect, you seem to be the fountain of wisdom on anything remotely GC on this board,in fact i enjoy some of your postings and undoubted knowledge on certain subjects, but in my opinion the GCs are looking like making a big mistake on this one! I'm just glad i don't own shares in that Drilling company as in my view they are in for a rough ride! ps,if you owned something jointly with another person and that other person decided to make a decision without even considering your views and even after you told your partner your views, they still carried on regardless. You'd be pretty pi$$$d off wouldnt you?

Msg 11 The Island to my knowledge has NEVER been Greek or GC....... in the last couple of thousand years it has been owned by the English, the French, the Venetians and (for a great proportion of the time) the Ottomans, followed again by the British. After 1960 most of the island became CYPRIOT property...... it's just that the GC's think they have the right to have it all.

I think Turkey has backed down on this issue and is now implying that "like will be met with like" i.e. Turkish Cypriots will will do a similar thing off the coast of North Cyprus. I think the stance of USA behind the scenes has played a big part. ismet

re msg 16 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14968737 Cyprus begins controversial oil and gas drilling Our Ismet seems to have had his finger on the pulse.. ...more 'games'.. hopefully both 'drillings' will show something worthwhile operating, commercially and BUSINESS agreements will take precedence over naval blockades ( or similar)
