fatelady - yes, you can buy anti-venom from a chemist. Keep it in the fridge. Cost was 250 TL and it has a shelf life.

They are protected by law... wouldn't go advertising it's demise at the hands of your cat! Incriminating the cat!

Apparently, according to David Roach, who worked alongside Paphos reptile expert Snake George, Blunt Nosed Vipers are the only snakes not to be protected in Cyprus. However, Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats 1979, later signed by EU and many other nations the Cyprus Blunt Nosed Viper is strictly protected (as a member of the Lebetine species). As for actually exercising the protection laws, Cypriot villagers have traditionally stuck to "kill on sight" policy due to dangers posed by this viper. Considering, the non poisonous Black snakes are the main and more successful hunters of rats, I do not think the Cypriots care much for this snake's contribution to nature. There are thousands breeding in Milos and other parts of Greece as well as many other Mediterranean Countries. I just fail to see why they are supposed to be so endangered - and if they were to become extinct in Cyprus, so much the better for our pets and children's safety

I was gardening yesterday and bending down to cut dead leaves off our lilies when I saw what I thought was the tail end of a lizard, we have a few in our garden which are quite cute so I waited to see which one it was as it looked very white to me but it had moved so quickly I didn't get a good look at it, it when I moved my rake it emerged from some dead leaves and much to my horror it was a blunt nosed viper - about 9 inches long but not very fat - I had been clearing leaves and weeding with gardening gloves on and count myself extremely lucky - I was petrified but went for my shovel and killed it - I don't like to kill anything but I could not leave it be - we live right in the centre of Girne town and our garden backs on to a main street. Please be careful when gardening. I have also told my neighbours to be on the alert.

My lovely Nina has wicked sense of humour. Not only did she kill a little blunt nose viper (about 8 inches long), but she sneaked it into the house so I could discover it on a 2 a.m. trip to the loo. Cats. You've got to love them.

Usually, with the Blunt Nosed Pit Viper, if there is one on a property, there's vry likely to be a nest of them fairly close by. They favour dry-stone walls for their nests. If you kill one, make sure that you cut its head off and bury the head deep, as wasps and hornets can and will ingest the venom, with very nasty consequences if they sting someone. Preferably, consign the whole snake to the septic tank ASAP! Where I lived, in a village outside Paphos, the area was seething with snakes of every type. We had to be particularly careful when going down to the river banks to collect wild asparagus!
