Can anyone explain to me where these are going to be kept and how the scheme is going to be manned whilst I understand there may be a delay in an emergency ambulance reaching an area such as Kayalar, I really have grave reservations over this scheme. There would need to be trained personel in each area available 24hours a day and within say 5mins reach of the equipment. If the equipment was to be carried around by a variety of individuals constantly then I suspect it will soon be faulty. I'm sure I will now be in for a barage of complaints about my negativity but to man a scheme like this 24hrs a day 7days a week 365 days a year is a huge commitment

There to be given to the local Police Stations and Officers will be trained to use them. As I have been informed. A very good idea.

I wonder if the police are in agreement with this, and would there be enough on duty at one time if say they were dealing with an accident, which they regularly attend. I thought there was to be two 112 responders on call which would have the defibs at hand with them? In my experience these defibs are great if you can reach a patient within a certain time whilst they are in fibrillation or indeed if the patient goes into fibrillation whilst the responders or paramedics are on scene. If the heart has stopped then it can't be started with these machines unless you have access to the drugs required to stimulate the heart into fribrillation. I am not knocking anyone that is trying to raise funds for these machines as I am sure they may save someone at some stage, but in the uk there are many areas that take an ambulance much longer to reach a patient than it does from Kyrenia. Go for it because as I said it may save a life sometime.

Fund raising is all very Lord-able, and the efforts of those concerned is amazing, but the workable logistics are..., the need for responders to have an intense Geographical and Street "Knowledge", be ready to abandon their activities at a moments notice Day or Night ,as well as speaking Turkish....I hope those concerned as responders fully understand the requirements/responsibilities.......Who will train them in "all" aspects of Myocardial Infarction.

The closer one lives to an ambulance station or hospital, the greater their chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. If they live in areas without such facilities, a rapid response team would be a reasonable alternative for initial life support. If that facility is unavailable, one would have to rely on family, friends, neighbours etc until the arrival of the ambulance. Even with correct CPR techniques being applied, if the ambulance is more than 10 minutes away, they are most likely to be unsuccessful in sustaining life. However, if a defibrillator is available, and applied as early as possible, and at least within the 10 minutes, one now has a chance of surviving the cardiac arrest. Maybe defibrillators can be sited at easily accessible areas in those outlying areas, in a cabinet with signage to phone 112. Maybe 112 could offer verbal assistance over the phone while an ambulance is despatched. More defibs + more people trained in CPR (1 and 3 day courses offered by 112) = More chance!

Even more confused is there a formal committee with a treasurer. Have the police agreed to house them and use them, and who is undertaking to train those who use them. MartinD has also raised other issues which are also very pertinant. These things cost a reasonable amount of money and to be asking people to donate without a workable plan is totally unreasonable. Whats the plan anyone???

In the first instance you would always ring 112 asap if someone has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. The rest of the logistics are still being worked on in conjunction with the people from 112. As msg 7 says, if you don't want to support this cause then don't but you are now in the most susceptible age group to suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. "Myocardial Infarction" is a heart attack which is a different thing to sudden cardiac arrest and therefore people will not need to be trained in "All" aspects of it. In sudden cardiac arrest it is vital to get a defibrillator onto that person as soon as possible, i.e. 5 -10 minutes and the person has a good chance of recovery....an ambulance takes up to 17 minutes to reach Esentepe (as quoted by 112). Think about it.

teatime...The whole idea is great,of that there is NO doubt...but the logistics involved are complicated to say the leased...someone posted a link to a town in Devon which did the same fund raising and got a AED etc; difference is, they are a small village ,they all know one-another , and they all speak the same language ..........Think about the difference..

message 6 Yes we have a committee with a treasurer, we have so far 55tl in the kitty! message 10 We realise the logistics involved are going to take a lot of time to work out, that is why we haven't said exactly where the AED will be housed yet but there will be a telephone that will be kept with it. Message 9 Well said. And finally Message 1 If you want to get involved either with the Esentepe fund raisers or with us here in Lapta just get in touch. And we are also still looking for donations for the raffle. Chris

Are 112 backing this scheme ? it seems that no one really knows how its going to be manned and that has to be the most difficult part of this surely

Bertie, We have to date not been in touch with 112, but Esentepe fundraisers have. 'it seems that no one really knows how its going to be manned and that has to be the most difficult part of this surely' We have a few options open to us and will let you know when we decide! Again please read message 12. Chris
