Yes. there are several cars running around and the fact that they still have GB plates mean that they have not been registered.

Cars brought into the country are given a year before they must be registered and tax paid.

Were you to buy an unregistered car then you would be responsible for paying tax etc.

Should you bring a car into the country and remove it after several months with the intention of bringing another car from the UK then the time that your first car was here counts ie first car in the country 9 months then your second car has to be registered within 3 months.

I believe all the above to be true. Maybe someone else can correct me if I am wrong.

So what if you drive your British plated car to Cyprus, stay for 3 Months (the max on visitors visa) and drive home. Can you repeat this every year or does each 3 month period add up?

Good question and I dont know the answer BUT it would not suprise me if they ( Customs ) would make you pay tax after your fourth return.

Ed1957 has a good point, personally would not get involved as you could end up paying not only for registration but anything else attached to that car and make sure the owner is still in NC.

friends of ours, mixedherbs on here, had to take their car out of the country. They had been driving to and from UK for a few years. all time spent here was totalled. I'm pretty sure that's what happened. No doubt Rachel will respond if I'm wrong.

You can drıve your car over to trnc for your holıdays....etc and then back again and so on.But only until you complete the 360 day limit. After that you won't be able to.............however long it takes you to complete..........

As far as uk plated cars on the island are concerned........find out how long they had been here because there is a good possibility that it may be in penalty, which means it won't only be the import duty that you'd need to pay but the penalty as well, which is 60tl per month.

I personally know a chap who has been driving around on a British plated car for longer than I have been here (4.5years) and have often wondered how he gets away with it.?????

Matulu. Will only do that until stopped on a routine police check or picked up for some other offence.

Then he will not only have to pay the tax, be fined as vorgozlu says but may well have to pay the mot and road tax for every year he has had the car here.

They ( the authorities ) do not miss a trick when it comes to collecting monies.

one of the nicest guys that I ever met, here or anywhere else, was a Scotsman called Brian ? (forgot his surname) A regular at the Watermill, Girne. He had an old red car of indeterminate age and make. He had a set of English plates and a set of TRNC plates. He'd managed for the last five years, at least, without paying any exhorbitant fees. Unfortunately Brian died last year, there's a plaque on the wall at the Watermill, just the one. Dunno what happened to the car but Gary got the microwave. Memories eh,

A Turkish Cypriot in Karsiyaka has been driving a white and yellow pick-up truck for at least three years. It`s an Xreg British plates. Think he works for the government. Lapta Belydire also have/had a British reg vehicle for a long time.

Well the authorities seem to be missing a trick for 4.5 years on collecting tax on that car!

Hello Minertor, yes indeed we had British plates brought the car out for 2 winters on the trot and we had to return the car as we had overstayed the car by 1 day in 2 years (361 days in 2 years) even though it was a different car. Register it or take it home was the orders. We took it home, we did too much travelling in different countries to have a TRNC plate!

Insurance companies love to be able to wriggle out of paying for damages, just think what joy they'd have at being able to say 'sorry sir as you are driving your vehicle in contravention of the road traffic laws in the TRNC we do not cover your damage costs or those of the car you hit.'
