Last night i had an accident. managed to go flying face first off a chair and put my hand out as i fell. It bent my hand back and i landed with force. I was in a huge ammount of pain, felt like a knife in my wrist and couldnt feel my fingers. I got taken to hospital but they said nobody was there to xray..so she gave me an injection for pain and a bandage. this didnt help and ive taken extra strong painkillers aswell but ive woken up in pain again. its swollen badly under my thumb and the top is bruised. still cant move the fingers easilly and dont have much faith in the hospital. doing everything one handed isnt easy. does anyone no if it sounds like a break or a sprain?

Souinds like you've damaged the ligaments in your hand/wrist. As above, you need to get it seen to asap. Go back to A & E.

Best to go and get it x-rayed just to put your mind at rest. If you don't want the hassle of going to the State Hospital go to one of the private ones. You can telephone me on 0533 884 5621 if you need advise.

As Spider says, you must go back to Emergency in Girne asap to get it seen to because you don't want to stop any blood flow. However, you could go into any of the larger private clinics and get an x-ray (walk straight in) In my case I would go straight to NEUH in Lefkosa, but then I'm biased towards them.

I am not a Nurse or a Doctor but fell down a step recently and like you put my hands out, very painful, went straight to A & E x-rayed straight away had broken my wrist, in plaster for 4 weeks :-(

I think like spider says you should go back to hospital, and ask for an x-ray!

You need a xray. It is the most reliable way of confirming if there is a fracture. If there is and you have no treatment then you could end up with a limb deformity or intermittent pain.

It is not worth the long term risks to simply sit back and ignore it. Any treatment would be based on what the xray identifies.

It's a bloody good job you injured yourself in the TRNC because if it was in the UK you would have had to wait 8 hours to be sent home with a few painkillers.

As you stay in Alsancak your best bet would be the hospital just past HSBC bank take the first right and it is on the right. No need to go all the way to Lefkosa.

Okay, a British Biomedical doctor who happens to live next door recommends that you go to the a&e as soon as possible.

If you have broken your hand in two places then dont go to those two places again!

If you are going to A&E its probably advisable to go by registered taxi just in case....wouldn't want to extend a previous thread would we

tattlad (mess 8)

What a silly statement to make! I broke my wrist in the UK went to my local hospital, waited precisely 1 hour had my X ray, and put in plaster within 2.5 hours! and had excellent follow up treatment! perhaps it's been a long time since you have visited a NHS hospital?

My elderley mum also fell and broke her hip, in spite of all the awful story's regarding the NHS I found the service along with the aftercare of her GP and the district nurses second to none!

I have to speak as I find!

Don't waste your time with any of the hospitals mentioned here except the Near East University Hospital in Lefkosa. Competent staff there. I speak from experience!

Msg1: I'ts such a shame that you will be going away fro the TRNC with such a negative attitude to the medical health treatment here. To generalise and call it all "useless" and "terrible" and then condemn a clinic because "they didn't speak English" is more than a little harsh don't you think?

I'm sorry that you have ben in such pain though.

So do I, about 5 years ago I fell and dislocated my shoulder. Girne hospital xrayed me then arranged a taxi to Lefkosa General. I was treated straight away. When I woke up I was on a ward, my wife said I'd to wait an hour then I could go. At reception they called a taxi and a security man stood with us until it came (it was 1-00am)

About 1 year after this my wife fell in the apartment, she was concussed and had a bad cut on the back of her head. The ambulance arrived within a few minutes, although she refused to go in it. I took her to Girne hospital where she was treated immediately, and again on return trips, stitches out etc.

Total cost to us both, 10tl, for my exray.

I agree with woodspeckie, in June i had breathing problems, i was taken to state hospital in Girne and as soon as the receptionist see me she sent me to A&E dept so no waiting, within minutes i was checked over and whisked off in a wheelchair for xray back to a&e for treatment and regularly checked on until released. I can not fault the treatment or the care that I received and I was very grateful to them. When i went to pay there was no charge as it was emergency! I dont think you can get better than that!!!

i have nothing but good to say about the Kamiloglu Hospital, the road past HSBC to the right - every time I have gone without an appointment I have been seen almost straight away. Lump in breast - mammagram and ultrasound immediately. Hurt knee - Xray immediately - and various other things. To say they are useless seems rather extreme. They do not have a large staff for emergencies in the evening - ok - but they are there and willing to help from 8.30am ish onward! The receptionist has little English but always calls one of the nurses who does speak English. As other people have said, evening emergencies, the A and E at Girne, if they cant do anything they send you to Nicosia. I hope by now you hae had an Xray!!

Everyone speaks from personal experience and there are good and bad experiences whatever country you are in but I wonder if one of our Turkish Cypriot friends went to a hospital in England how many of the nurses/doctors would speak Turkish!

On Sunday morning my friend tripped and fell and put her hand out to break the fall resulting in a lot of pain and swelling in the elbow region. We took her to the public hospital in Girne. You have to give your name and date of birth to the receptionist and you are issued with a sticker with a number on it. She was eventually seen about 1 hour later, was x-ray'd twice (the doctor wanted a 2nd x-ray because he couldn't see clearly enough on the 1st) and luckily enough there were no breaks or fractures. She was then splinted and a plaster bandage applied and she has to go back on Friday for a check-up. The doctor spoke good English and so did the x-ray man and the porters. Total cost 10TL.

hello everybody, thanks again for your help..

I went to the hospital in girne near to hsbc... i was seen within the hour. i had an x-ray and got checked by a very nice doctor who spoke english well.

unfortunately i have broken my wrist bone on the joint which is why i was in so much pain and couldnt move my hand... i am now in a cast and sling for 4 weeks :(( and going again saturday to check i havent swollen anymore.

i got good treatment, was banaged straight away and doctor was very shocked at how the government hospital had treated me. allowing me to leave without a xray or check up..and giving me a morphine shot which made me very poorly...

i am now still in alot of pain as im still swollen... and my back pocket is also in pain after the 430tl i was charged. note to self..never climb onto an unstable chair again!

well from the postings on here A&E Here are very good. I am sure if you had gone back to them they could have helped. Also I have heard that even at home they have been known to leave the casting for some time to allow the swelling to go down...

Good to hear it all sorted now.wishing you a speedy recovery.

Brillant advise from many helpful members ! this is what works when posters get everything right. It's obvious that quality care is available at a very reasonable cost if you know where to go ! well done everybody and a speedy recovery to Styliana !
