I so miss letting my dog off the lead and throwing a ball for her, the fear of poison is too great to risk. We walk her a lot and she swims and has free run of our garden but its not the same. If only we had an area that was enclosed and free of poison, i always pick up her poop and bring it home and she is friendly and playful. Does anyone know of such an area? I live in karsiyaka but can travel.........

Thank you

Oh, I have been looking for somewhere like that for years. I love it here but do miss English parks, where you can safely take a dog. Spider - sounds like you know of a secret location? sadly I can't travel all that way, so if anyone knows of somewhere similar East of Girne (Çatalköy area) I would love to know!

Hello,

i know this kind of problem due to my work orders (mallorca, kreta). And i was always wondering what i would do if i was a dog owner.

Maybe a large group of dog lovers can team up? Rent or buy an area which will be perfect for walks and other activities.

I do not know about the prices, but i hope my suggestion is not disconnected from reality.

Best wishes!

I would suggest all dog owners in an area getting together and paying a visit to your Belediye..

It would help if you get a prior appointment to see the mayor himself.

Explain to him the necessity of a safe area for exercising/walking your dogs offleash and ask him to appoint an empty area and if possibly have it wire fenced to be used as a dog park.

Considering the taxes you pay to belediye each year,it is not much to ask and will not cost the belediye a fortune to do it.

We have sighthounds,1 greyhound Riley a street dog, 1 rescue smooth saluki Samir, and our spoiled pure Saluki Miskhy.

They are a joy to watch running in full flow, but virtually impossible to recall especially the salukis,we would love to be able to unleash them safely, either by themselve or in the company of other running dogs.

Barbed wire and poison are our main concerns, so if you know of a place please give me a ring, thanking you in advance,

Stuart

I can understand why dog owners would be delighted to have such a facility but over the years it seems that the poisoners continue their evil deeds without punishment. Perhaps you will need to give thought to how you arrange between yourselves policing/guarding of the facility and daily checks and sweeps of such a site for the presence of toxic material. It is likely that the sick poisoners will target it as a place where their victims are gathered. Sadly it is recognised in UK that when well meaning groups of people have worked long and hard finding funds to provide such things as children's play areas they quickly attract low life drug abusers who quickly trash the areas, make then unsafe, and policing necessary.

There used to be plenty of places where I could walk my dogs within walking distance of my home. Sadly they are now covered in "villas" and swimming pools!

I have been using he old airstrip at Catalkoy for the last couple of years which meant taking them by car , but I see from another post on this Board that poison has been found there too so now there is nowhere I can safely let my dogs off the lead.

Unforunately I doubt a dedicated area would work , who would police it and it is so easy to throw poison over a fence now that poison is being directed at pet dogs and not (as in the good old days) at least only directed at predators in the vicintiy of crops and livestock.

Group exercising would mean help at hand in event of emergency but might also attract ill wishers.

what about muzzles? or can they breathe poison? i dont know, but it would stop them picking anything up in their mouths. cant play fetch, maybe chase instead?

Hi

There is a great place which is near you. If you drive through Karsiyaka towards Guzelyurt when you get to the nightclubs on the corner turn right along the coast road. Turn right again and go down to the beach, you will find wide open spaces where we take our dogs. There is part of the beach which has a sign no dogs, but the rest is OK. We go there often.

well maybe the council should put a wire roof too and have opening times, thus keep it locked at night.

Message 12.

1. I did try muzzling a dog once - and only once. He hated it, he rubbed it against anything he could find, and eventually before he could be stopped rubbed his cheek on the ground and grit and goodness knows what else into his eye. Only quick action a good vet and good luck saved the eye!

2. Dogs sweat through their tongues they need freedom to pant , particularly running about in hot weather and to drink. If a dog got looose and lost, he would be at risk of poison, kidnapping etc. but there would be just a chance he could find his way home or be resccued by a kind person. If he couldnt drink he would suffer badly and perhaps die.

3. The idea of joint walks is for dogs to socialise - which they do by sniffing each other - not always exactlywith decorum !!!! - but its their way of making friends.

The only real solutions are tough action on poisons and less building on open space.

What a sad thread. It really is despicable that dog owners cannot exercise their pets without fear of harm or death to the animal.

Shameful and unbelievable that such a thing is allowed to happen.

One way and another, we dog owners have to accept it is not a particularly 'dog friendly' country.....poison, snakes, sand flies.

Msg 19. Iceman was not being sarcastic, he rang us and offered to be spokesman if enough of us in the Catalkoy area could get together on this, so thanks Mustafa !!

Re another post on this thread, some poisons can be inhaled as well as ingested

We have been walking our dogs along the headland at Diana Beach (Catalkoy near the CocaCola factory) for many years without any incidents of poisoning. The beach is out of bounds during the summer months but there is no problem taking the dogs down there out of season.

Thanks Lester, I forgot that, think I may have seen you. But I worry about the beach itself because of the cafe which has irresistable smells for even well behaved dogs, and people tend to put poison in such places when out of use because of rats and mice.

Sorry iceman, i honestly thought you was having a joke ;)

Maybe at the same time we can ask our mayor (one of the richest in the world) to allocate some pavements for humans to walk on without the threat of breaking any bones.... oh and a regular supply of water would be much appreciated too...

My 4 pooches really miss the walks we used to go on, but like others on the board we can no longer get to old walking areas because they are covered in "luxury villas" or in an other case a dreadful un supervised monster of a dog who won't let me go passed his territory.

I would go along with something in the Catalkoy area - if someone from Ozankoy is acceptable!

May I suggest one unpleasant subject should be tackled before the authorities are approached. I cant carry a pooper scouper and bag because I am lame and with a stick in one hand and three dog leads in the other and pockets stuffed with keys, dog bics, mobile etc. where do I put it ,

Normally I ensure the dogs "go" before I take them out, but accidents do happen, particularly if they have come a long way and are excited. A bin for "doggy does" or a sandpit would be needed and would have to be cleaned.

And even then the land would become sour with urine. Bitches urine in particular kills grass.

Also if the idea is for dogs to socialise , will someone be checking that they are all immunized and treated for parasites.

And what about fights? How large an area is anticipated?
