Generally the neutral should be blue in colour. However depending on what cable the electrician used to wire the light up who knows.Consult a qualified electrician and keep the job safe and correct.

Mssg. 3 I agree. 6 years ago the electrician involved in our place used whatever wire he have lying around the place at the time. It's a minefield.

If it worked as a light ok, check the brown actually is the live with a mains tester. then the other has to be the neutral or the light would not have worked. Yellow wiring often used in 2 way systems, where you have 2 switches for one light.

ginty, If it's a 2 way switch, no problem, just means the fan can be isolated or switched on at either as you do now for the light. Deffinitely make sure you drill the ceiling (I assume concrete) and use good fixings. If it's timber/plasterboard veilings, make sure screwed to a joist. Don't fit the fan to the light fitting box in the ceiling if it's made of plastic as the bolts will eventually strip from the plastic threads. I have large 1.3m fans in a number of rooms, all connected to original wiring, but bolted to the ceilings, and have had no problems.

You would struggle to get a job at Kibtec unless you were colour blind.
