Hi Trackbagger, Attending the incident in 1973 as a member of RAF Akrotiri Mountain Rescue Team, I have a detailed report of the Illushin 18 crash above Lapithos including photographs and a map - British Military Sheet No 4011/IV Map Ref 169 081. Regarding the other crash I have visited a trashed memorial in the car park at Bufevento Castle but I have not other information. Regards Les Smith

The crash sites of the Ilyushin IL-18D run by Egyptair and the Boeing 727 run by Talia Airways are now within military controled area and there is no access to the public. You can however get close to the Talia Airways crash site. By car, preferably a 4X4, leave Girne on the Gazi Magusa road, following the coastal strip eastwards for some 8 miles, until you reach the fork left towards Esentepe and the Karpas. You stay on the main Gazi Magusa road as it heads inland and begins to climb up into the mountains approaching the Besparmak Mountain to your left. At the brow of the pass, signposted tracks, head off to the left and right. To the left is the path to the Sourp Magar Monastery. To the right is the Buffavento track which you must follow for some 6 miles as it runs along the ridge of the mountains. For Sat Nav Devices the co-ordinates you need to see the monument to the plane crash are: 35 Degrees 17'06.12"N 33 Degress 24'39.92"

Hope you enjoy the visit, and of course your hobby... The memorial site at Buffavento is a disgrace to see, as vandals have desecrated the memorial... It should have been repaired and made good in respect of those that lost their lives there.
