Hi to everyone, About a month ago, my family and I have moved to Nicosia, Cyprus (South). AFter living in US for a lifetime, we have decided to move to a place that sounded more promising, as my fiance lost his job, due to the company being shut down. For a month now, we have been interviewing here and there, but everything seems to be moving slow, and the money is flying!!! Our savings are being spent, and the cost of living seems much higher than we thought. After visiting Lefkosa about 10 days ago, we found out that the living costs are much lower, and that we could really save by moving to the North Cyprus. Our concern is finding a job. My fiance is a sales guru, and I am a marketing specialist. We have both worked in great companies in the US, and I have also been assitant professor for 2 years, during my Masters Degree. He speaks Arabic, English and Romanian and I speak English, Spanish, Italian, French-all fluent. Please advise where we can and how apply for jobs in TRNC? Than

Hi very sorry but you will find it virtually impossible to get a job here, even if you do the pay will be very low and you will be extremely lucky if you can actuallly earn enough to live on. Your only possibility would be working for the EU or one of the companies who have contracts with them but I do not know how you get these jobs, best use your remaining money for flights back to USA.

It seems impossible to get a job, unless you speak Turkish. We went and inquired everywhere. We were refused even a chance to speak to an HR manager at a few places we visited. Thank you all for your honesty. Kindly appreciated. @MartinD41: Merci Martin.

There would be nothing to stop you living in the north and commuting to work in the south thereby getting the benefit of lower living costs in the north. As has already been pointed out, getting a job in the north will be almost impossible and getting a living wage ditto. There are jobs available in the south but the financial climate is poor there as in most of Europe. I suspect that, with your joint skills, the way forward has to be with your own business but can you financially support a business start up? Also, you say that you have been living in the States but are you actually Americans or do either of you have EU passports? Being in possession of an EU passport would make things much easier for you in the south obviously. Have to say that it doesn't appear that you guys have done much research into the realities of life in this mickey mouse island before you pitched up here!

Hi would advise against moving to the North side, we lived North side for 5 years and now live in the South, it may seem cheaper on the North but I can assure you actually living there is NOT cheap, we lived in USA for 10 years before moving to North Cyprus, biggest mistake we ever made, however so far we are enjoying our time in the South and already working, having joined an existing partnership and going very well. We wish you luck in whatever you decide.

Thank you so much...I appreciate that, and also like that idea, of commuting. Now, I have one more question: Are the Universities on the North side not hiring at all? I mean, I called 2 of them, and even the operator does not speak English. Wouldn't they benefit more from having more English speaking staff? We are waiting as far as responses for South, went to few interviews, with generally positive feedback-but they say to give them a week or so for the final decision. We are becoming quite impatient to be honest. And everyone we met is quite discouraging, and not one person has given us any positive feedback as far as life on the island. We have EU passports, so I believe that would not be an issue, as far as work permit in the South. My final question is: Are there NO jobs in TRNC or there are jobs but the pay is minimal? Thank you once again and be blessed!

I'm sad to report that Northern Cyprus is a closed shop as far as Non Turkish Cypriots are concerned when it comes to work. This is controlled by the need for Non Cypriots to have a work permit which has to be applied for to the Government, by the employer. Regardless of how well qualified you are, if there is a Cypriot out there who is remotely capable of doing the job then he/she will get it. The Universities here had a cull of non TC employees, several years ago & nothing has changed. The job market here is totally protectionist for locals, regardless of ability & academic excellence.

message 1: every couple of days some joker pops up on "cyprus 44" and states that they are considering moving to north cyprus but then in the course of thread he puts up more and more reasons who this may not be such a good idea if you are that person my congratuations on a fine piece of propaganda every time, an effort of professional standard but two problems still remain however: the individual of multiple identities must be near-desperate he will never seen north cyprus conjoined with the r.o.c. and also, since north cyprus is the protege of turkey, trying to put off brits on the forum will be pretty much irrelevant

@ andre 514: I am not certain if you are referring to me, having multiple identities, as I just joined this forum, in a true, genuine need of some advice. For crying out loud, I have never lived in TRNC and needed some people who reside there to give me a piece of advice on how things are. So far, there have been two individuals with some feedback on how to go about things, other than that: we have been pretty much crushed with "reality". I believe that we ll give it a shot, and see how this works out. Thank you all for great advice, and hope to meet some of you in person.... Kindest regards.

Unfortunately, and not wishing to sound obtusely negative, I think you'll be wasting more time and, apparently, importantly for you, money. If you can't find work on the Greek Cypriot side, you'll be 'shoveling peas with a pitchfork' in the North!

Write to the local universities , as the universities are quite a large sector in the TRNC.
