Pity if you missed the music tonight. probably the best concert staged in TRNC ever. All three acts were out of this world. Can we have the same next year please?

Seconded Vince. Apparently there were 3,500 people there & the Amphitheatre was full.

The Bohemians were, I'd go as far to say, awesome.

Anybody not there missed a fantastic night.

Agreed it was the best night I've had on the island for years and for a very good cause...........the only negative is the state of the loo's right from the start, unforgivable really.

Also the beer and wine ran out...............again, same as last year, although they did manage to bring in a few carrier bags every now and again. Probably lost out on quite a bit of profit for themselves as a result.

How is it they never learn!!

All in all a good night though.

Agree about the lack of wine. They ran out of wine very early on....about 7 to 7.30pm. I didn't know the beer had run out as well. Maybe they underestimated the demand, but surely had an idea about the number of tickets that had been sold. I had just one beer & a soft & as a result was very sober. As you say the Belediye lost out on profits there.

Agree too about the toilets, but I hadn't expected them to be pristine & they lived up to my expectations.

Looked like there had been some sort of flood in there with soggy cardboard all over the floors.

You must be deluded or sick. The entire evening was hypeed up copies. The place was full. What a sad endictmentof TRNC..Lets all go listen to crap by second rate immitators and then we can pretend we have seen something memorable.I would have sooner seen Bex Marshall again and that was bad enough the first time....at least she was original..The second group the night before were worth ten of the secind rate immitators. What a total dead loss. Let us please hasve the chance to see originals not second rate immitators with second rate security...that should frighten ur all

cyprustom.

I wouldn't call it nitpicking about the bogs. Just a comment.

The bogs as you put it, didn't affect my night at all which I thoroughly enjoyed, but ladies have to sit down to pee & the ladies on the right hand side with your back to the stage were a bit of a disgrace. Men are also far less fussy about loos than Ladies.

Btw. My husband said that the Gents on the LH side were fine.

Hey, we all knew they were not the real deal,

what do you expect for 25Tl

Ran out of wine, 20Tl per bottle & beer 5Tl per can

Great prices for a night out at the Amphitheatre

Also no toilet paper, soap or towels in the toilets.

We all got by and enjoyed ourselves

Everyone had a great time, even took our own cushions too.

40 of us went an all thoroughly enjoyed what we paid for.

Will go again if it returns.

Well done to the organisers.

I thought both nights entertainment was tremendous value for money and what an amazing venue. Well done to all the artists, organisers, workers and volunteers etc. Look forward to more next year.

Msg 6. Why did you bother to go last night, it was always billed as "tribute acts" and as these acts go, they certainly wasn't "second rate". One thing I will agree with in your comments was that the Serdar band on Friday night were probably the best act of the two nights, certainly would like to see more of them.

Had a fantastic night, yes they weren't the originals ( would have been a hard job for Freddie to get there)but I knew that when we brought the tickets but they were very entertaining which is what we went for.

Okay the loos were very bad but better than a few nights before, but I expected it and took tissues and anti-bacteria gel, sorted

WILL DEFINATELY GO AGAIN.

Have to agree the Serdar band on Friday were brilliant. Come on people, these were for charity so very well done the organisers. I just wish more TC's had been there to enjoy it on Friday.

please. Oh! and wasn't it great that the predicted thunder storms didn't dampen our enjoyment.

It was a great evening's entertainment and thanks to the organisers. We bought wine at 8.45 but were suprised that it was from the South!

It's the first time we have seen the Ampitheatre full and it is a lovely venue only 5 minutes from our home - we didn't have that in Essex!

My first time at the ampitheatre, and had a thoroughly great evening...awesome. True, disappointed about the run out of beer and the toilets were fine from my point of view (apart from no paper).

It makes me wonder why people like msg 6 bother going to these events if all they can do is slag it off. In fact, why do you bother staying on the island, if you feel the need to see 'originals' go somewhere where you can see them if it bothers you that much (or just don't go!). Well done to the organisers and all three acts......

Great night Bohemiams brilliant seen a few Queen tribite and they performed Bohemiam Rapsody brilliantly.

Funky Monkeys should have been on second and had the police slot in time

Was not impressed with police tribute - still police music is not to my liking - even tho I have worked on a few Sting videos.

Bohemians left us wanting more - good note to leave on.

Well done everyone involved

Never liked The Police much and kept well clear of Queen when they were around, so was not really looking forward to the evening but was amazed at the quality of the 2 main acts...brilliant....great value for money...great show....great location.

Now lets look at the problems which seemed to be caused by the catering balls up.

I wonder if the show organisers (assume ex-pats) sat down with the authorities (assume TCs) and advised them about supplying ample drink for those attending ?

It always stems back to organisation., which is easy if you listen to those that know.

Will it improve next time, I doubt it.

CJtill...

glad you enjoyed the act...

over the last 3 months we have had weekly meeting to the Belediysei and informed that we were predicting fulling the place. Drinks and food were always under the Belediysei and I'm sorry that this side of the event was not up to the mark.... we inturn were on the phones many times during the event to arrange a number top-up supply runs... I do not think that the Belediysei thought we could fill the place with the numbers who came on the night (I myself did not thing we would do it!)...

a thank anyway for your support.

CJtill.

Then get off your butt and help.

Saw people buying fifty cans a time, no wonder the beer ran out.

Great evening, well done to all concerned.

PS. Did you see the litter left everywhere - don't you Brits complain about the TC's anymore.

Wow, what a night, couldn't have been bettered. Our group had a ball and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, thank you so much for such entertainment, all for charity and ONLY 25 lira. There will ALWAYS be complaints, especially on this forum, just steer clear of these events and let us, who want to, enjoy them without your input. Many thanks.

Lets hope they cleaned the theatre after the concert, i have never seen so much rubbish, spilt drinks, fag ends, bottles and cans. even the stage looked like a car crash! my relations were proud to show me the new venue but were disgusted to see the state of this new venture

The setting is beautiful, with so much potential. but i can see venue ending up as the local tipping ground

Could'nt agree more about the litter you would,nt mind but the bins were on the way out. One thing I think the organisers missed out on was a raffle, one big prize maybe and a retiring collection, the night was worth much more than the ticket prices !!

We the organisers, Cheshire Homes and friends, stayed until 2pm clearing up the rubbish. 25 black sacks worth and loads of cushions, did put a slight damper on evening but hey ho we had a fantastic time, and I would like to thank my husband Richard and Hal for 6 months of hard work, the last month especially, for getting it right, and their team thanks, you know who you are. Dealing with Prima Donnas is not easy!!!

A fantastic night of great music, raising money for charity. It was brilliant to see so many people on their feet dancing and enjoying themselves. If those who complain can't enjoy themselves without being tanked up that really is their problem, next time perhaps they'll just stay in a bar somewhere.

A big thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put this great night on, looking forward to the next one.

What a fantastic night at Girne Amphitheatre ! Funky Monkey with Johnny Hawkins (has an excellent voice - welsh of course) The Secret Police and Bohemians .All bands were brilliant - haven't had such a good night in ages. We drove from Bogaz(karpaz) so I didn't drink, but the people in front of us came back to their seats with wine and beer around 11.30pm.

Stunning venue facing the sea, with the rocks all lit up - where else could you enjoy good music in such a beautiful setting?Would like to see more bands at this venue - hope this happens before Festival 12 !!

Just a thought- In future could an announcement be made at the end asking for volunteers to help clear the rubbish, I would have willingly stayed behind and helped out. Or even ask people to take there rubbish to the exit where there could be black bags awaiting it.

Well done to all the volunteers who did stay behind clearing up and thanks.

I was helping out with security last night. Nobody was thrown out last night Brit or otherwise, drunk or otherwise. 3500 people having a good time and showing what a great party can be staged in Girne! A fantastic night with top quality music and solid organisation. Bring on Festival 12!

Something wrong here. Shakespeare??? It was here and drastically undersupported. Hardly anyone seemed to know about it. The amphitheatre had about 250 people; the Salamis event for Saturday was cancelled due to the forecast of rain, and the production on the Friday at the Bedestan had an audience of 1! Their Sense and Sensibility had an audience of about 100 at Bellapais.

So, Shakespeare was here, and one might say ;'What fools these mortals are....' for not supporting them . I hope they come next year, but maybe independently would be a better option.

One person out of over 3000, who cares. It was a great night and if anyone was stupid enough to get drunk and miss it then they lost out.

Why, when something good goes on here, do the moaners and negatives have to crawl out of the woodwork, people organising events must despair.

Really enjoyed the show, well done to the organizers and hope you can do it again next year. Comments about toilets are not worthy, have they never been to "V" or to Glastonbury - the comments would have been valid for those places. Expected to see loads of litter left at the end of the night as beer filled folks only care about going home - maybe more litter points would have helped there, thought for next year as the old metal bands that hold the plastic bags could be put on the backs of every support column and that would have helped. As for running out of beer/wine, I doubt the Belediysei ever imagined that 3,500 people would be able to drink that amount - and still drive home!!!

Only one real thing I would have liked to see, keeping in mind it is not my country and that we all live together, it would have been nice to have had the announcements in Turkish as well as English - its all part of that joining in thing!!!

Message 24.

Reading all the above it seems to me you were let down by the Belediyes blinkers.

Dont know about the financial agreements with the Belediye but if you can bring over such popular acts who perform so well then you are on a winner, IF you can hire the theatre Lock Stock etc Then ask ex-pats if they want to set up their own food and drink stalls (for a fee of course) and hopefully the extra profit made will pay T.B and the concert goers will have an even better time as they will have a wide choice of food and drink, and a lot less queing time.

Please.....this is meant to be both constructive criticism and ideas for the future.

message 48...

all constructive comment taken on board... good....

yes this is one of the options the we were talking about last night (sorry this moring at about 2am) while we started the clean up.... we hire the place.. recover this costing through concession outlets and take more control on the drinks/food and any other things we can do...

this is the 2nd rock night we have put on and there seems to be a feeling that the ex-pats here in TRNC want more...yes we know where things did not work and where they did... last year we learnt a lot... this year even more. We were taken aback by the number who came... thank you so now we must look both to sorting this years problem and if we do it again... make it even better.

It may be of a help to us.... constructive comments please...

would you like to see... I have been offer various options, and maybe there is other things which will good down well....

Shakespear was company loved the place and if their schedule permits... could come back... I can tell you now that the Queen act were blown away by the setting and by the crowd last night. The TRNC inmate they meet was another big plus... last night they had a party at Cafe George with another large happy crowd.

It is sad that this year when we asked for help from certain groups (Classical music and opera) they seemed to have no interest in and ex-pat thing!!! Maybe now that will change and maybe we can offer a greater range of entertainment... who knows!!!! We can try! But is there a market and will the number turn out to watch!

2500 people enjoying themselves, sorry 2499 (Pawson being the one that didn't and who I might say, for an author, really should have better grammar!!) one person escorted out by friends for obviously enjoying himself a little too much - not bad percentages I would say!

Although obviously for some, zero brawls/stage charging or any other security issues denotes second rate security

I enjoyed both nights but it has become evident to me that the advertising of all three evenings (3rd one cancelled) was aimed at Brit Expats/Visitors. I know for a fact that Cypriot Turks just love these sort of concerts. Just go to the Efes Blues festival next month and see for yourself how many Cypriot Turks there are compared to Expats. It is important that the advertising of such events are made with both Expats an Cypriot Turks in mind. If this had been done then I am sure the third night would not have been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

Is there a provisional date for next year so that we could plan our visit. Missed out on the festival by a few days.

Oh and what ever happens next year please make sure Serdar and his band are playing (and they should be headlining the evening). What a superb band.

AlsancakJack, these events were advertised in both English and Turkish, they were on Turkish Radio and advertised in the Turkish Press. The programmes were in Turkish and English, our committee is half Turkish/half English. We went to all the Universities and GAU were one of our supporters, now you tell me what more we can do to get The TC's to come please, we want them to enjoy. Our patients are all Turkish so it is their kind we are raising money for but they do not seem to do charities. Although having said all this, after The Police, the doors were not manned and at least 50/70 TC's came in and watched in awe.

Halet Levent was postponed at his managements request, because of the weather forecast, he is in Turkey at the moment and did not want to waste money coming over if the weather was bad.

You know I would really have liked to have gone to the Halet Levent night. I understand what you are saying but there is something missing as all of the Cypriot Turks that I know had no idea of what was going on over the 2/3 days. With Cypriot Turks the advertising needs to get down to grass roots level.

That's what happens with the Efes Blues festival and they leave advertising to the last minute but I can guarantee that 95% of the audience are Cypriot Turks and that is because they get the news on the ground and expats do not. I guess what I am trying to say is that to appeal to the Cypriot Turkish community you will need to look at another way of advertising. Maybe posters/handouts in villages?

But if you go to the Efes Blues Festival next monthe you will see what I mean.

I have to confess I left mine behind, but only after I saw all the others left. No excuse I know. Will take mine with me next time.

Thought Emma and co were brilliant backing Funky Monkey. Have to say I have not enjoyed Johhny as much. Shame they were not on for longer.

It was one of the best nights we have had in North Cyprus in four years - the Bohemians were absolutely fantastic and it's good to see Johnny back with Funky Monkey. We should all thank the organisers for booking these top class acts and look forward to more of the same.

Well, I must be a right goody two shoes. I took all our cans/food containers, and others around me, to the bins at the top.

How the heck could the organisers have forseen this kind of turnout?, good for you, a brilliant evening.

As for the bele letting us down, bless them, I think they also did a fantastic job. Burgers/hot dogs and fries for 10tl, beers 5tl, all served with smiley faces all evening.

Second rate security................................

blimin' cheek.......What did you want to see, police with guns? Try tackling them on the rugby pitch and see what state you come away after a crum.

Good on you boys, you did a grand job, not that there was any trouble (lovely TRNC). They too have families, organised babysitters, gave up their time, so they could police the arena.

What the heck more do you moaners want?

Thankyou all, fantastic evening, x

For what its worth I think it needs to be said that if people were drinking in moderation there would have been probs plenty of drink to go round, why is it the ex-pats want to get sloshed when they go for nights out to things like this, I saw men drinking from glass bottles of wine and waving there arms about with bottles in there hands, also saw two men and a woman at the drink servery buying 30 beers, then saw them go back to there seats there was 6 of them and they left all the rubbish when they left, all Brits

At the end of the night, why not ask the compare to make an announcement and ask everyone to please put their rubbish in the bin and return the cushions on the way out - that's what we did.

I wasn't at the event --- got all the highlights from lucky family members who DID make it..... so envy you all!

Her Indoors... a really good idea about the rubbish - just such a shame it needs to be suggested.

Scruffdogg setting a regular date would be great as I know several parties (and they can't be the only ones) who travel out in Sept and would rearrange booking to take this event in!

@ msg 37 Noiseboy - you'd be surprised by who the Prima Donnas actually were, I worked with Funky Monkey, the Secret Police and the Bohemians all of Saturday night and they were all lovely, charming, undemanding guys, especially when you consider they weren't paid anything to come here and perform!

Agree with everyone about msg 6 ( would be very suspcious of anyone who can describe 'blues' as original anyway ! ). I thought all three acts were brilliant but for me The Secret Police stood out as exceptional - I used to play in a band and that stuff is not easy to play. I saw The Police on their reunion tour and let me tell you that The Secret Police sounded more like them in their heyday than they did...!! Stunning !

On this evidence - give me the 'second rate imitators' anyday - the quality of the music and entertainment was marvellous. Here's to the next concert of this kind.

scruffdog,

The sticky end of the stick is always held by the organizers but you did a wonderful job and can not be expected to have planed to cover every event. Very well done indeed and thank you for a wonderful time.

One more comment for you: I noticed (well I would having been in IT for over 25 years) that the big screens to the sides were run from on set cameras and from a laptop down at the front - when the Bohemians were on we got the odd shot of Queen from UTube etc, would it not be easy to set up a complete "rolling" set of photo's/vids etc so that we did not have to suffer the normal Windows Media screen savers?

OK, that was the comment and now the answer to your question is YES. If you are trawling for help for next years do then drop me an email, more than welcome to help. Even to pick up litter afterwards!!!

Does anyone have any videos of Friday's or Saturday's performances that we can post on the Girne Festival website please? We will of course give you full credit if we use it.
