Part 1 is done in Girne on the anniversary of your residency. Part 2 in Nicosia can be 1 year (minus a day) later.

Vaughan, as a follow on to your reply, what if one is out of the country on the anniversary of their residency, can they start the process earlier than the anniversary date, or do they do it on their return?

I applied to renew my residency 3 days before it expired. Had the blood test done and was told to take my passport & blood test results to Lefkosia 2 to 3 week later. I was planning to go this Friday. Today I went with 2 friends to cross to the South for the day. The main purpose of my visit was to post an urgent letter back to UK but also was looking forward to doing some shopping. Was horrified to find out at the crossing point that my friends could go through but, as my residency had expired, I could only leave if I paid a 900tl fine! I had wrongly presumed that as I'd completed the first stage of the application I would be free to travel till I got my renewal from Lefkosia - not so!

I felt very guilty for spoiling my friends' day out as they wouldn't cross without me. Guess who bought lunch on the Turkish side?

Maggie, a warning of this 'new' ruling on the temp residency regulations was very recently given on this forum, you must have missed it. :(

So just to recap - If your residency period is expiring and your renewal is not through you must attend one of the crossing points and get a 90 day extension stamp ON the day of expiry. This was related to my wife very recently as a change in policy and she put a thread on here.

How far in advance of the expiry can you apply? Think it used to be 2 weeks?

Msg 8 Groucho

Yes I must have missed your wife's thread - wished I'd seen it I felt so stupid!

But WHY couldn't the police tell us that when we applying in Girne? Surely there must be a lot of people who don't check into 44 every day? We must all spread the word!

Message 9: You can apply a month before your residency expires and this has been the recommended period for the last couple of years or so. Prior to this, the police used to issue a piece of paper to say that you had applied for a renewal. This paper could then be used at the border crossing. When this practice was stopped, the time at which you could apply for your renewal was changed from 2/3 days before expiry to a month.

Maggie.

Maybe the police in Girne are not aware of the current interpretation being put on the situation at the crossing. Left hand not knowing and all that....
