On September 27 the Turkish navy launched the corvette TCG Heybeliada, the first modern warship to be designed, built, and equipped primarily from local resources. The TCG Heybeliada is the first in what will eventually be a series of 12 multi-purpose littoral combat warships built under the Milli Gemi (National Ship or MILGEM) program. The Heybeliada has an overall length of 99 meters (325 feet), a maximum beam of 14.4 meters (47 feet), and a displacement of 2,000 metric tons (2,200 tons). In addition to weapons systems, the Heybeliada will have a hangar and platform for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) Sea Hawk helicopters and/or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The vessel has been designed to operate with a crew of 93, including aviation personnel. It is expected to have range of 3,500 nautical miles and a top speed of over 29 knots.

Well done Turkey, a country that makes things. Britain used to do that, now they depend on Financial institutions and the service industry and look where that has left it.

Hey teatime, IF you are interested in F1 you'll note that most teams are located in the UK - where 'we' make the cars.. 'We' still make a lot of cars here... trouble is 'we' don't own the companies.. Last time I looked we still built warships .. but just can't afford 'em or the sailors to man 'em :(

Ah Capitalism... don't you just love how well it's all going for the western world now that the spivs have taken over from the captains of industry? Err - nope. Been there seen it and guess what - it's a recipe for disaster while the filthy-rich get what? Yes you guessed it... richer whilst telling everybody else - it's time to tighten your belts lads and take a cut in your standard of living... yeah right! You lot! Up against the wall... There was a time when Britain was the envy of the world because we made things people wanted... OK I do want a McLaren but I'm not holding my breath...

The TRNC are currently constructing a class 2 battlecruiser at their new dry docks just outside Lefke. An unreliable source close to the Ministry of strategic defense was quote as saying that the warships planned launch has been put back until early spring as the crew are still awaiting their work permits to come through. Once seaworthy, this addition to the TRNC fleet will not only be able to deter a coastal invasion from potential enemies of the state, but will also be available for hire for fishing trips from Girne harbour (£20 per head....lunch included) For more details please contact Mehmet on ..

The Fishing trips will presumably be on a "No catch- No pay" basis as in Florida.
