We've friends coming over shortly who prefer to use traveller's cheques and direct debit cards when travelling. How easy is it to get cash using Traveller's cheques here? Do the banks make charges for encashment? How safe are holes-in-the-wall cash machines here? Grateful for any advice C44 friends can give

Don't get travellers cheques, as shops don't like to take them, and the banks charge you. cash machines are safe here, from the HSBC bank you can even take out sterling if you want. when you take you TL out from the ATM you may have some charges and your bank will play with the exchange rate. you can use your card in shops no problem.

Why not bring cash and get more for your money here. Never heard of any problems with ATMs in N.C. Unlike when visiting the family in London, only used a cash machine once, when I checked my statement ,some thief had bought a dishwasher, washing machine and a cooker.

I have to agree with all above - bring out your spending cash in sterling and get much better rates here. It allows you to purchase TL when you need it and not return home with pockets of turkish lira.

if worried about safety does anyone travelling have an HSBC card, if so no problem lifting cash from machines. other bank cards you can lift cash but most charge 2% plus their exchange rate and minimum charge of £2/3 Travellers cheques you will be unable to cash

Just to confirm Pugwash's post, a quote from the Monex website: - Monexchange is ready to buy your travellers cheques. Between 3% and 4% commission is charged when travellers cheques are cashed over the counter. Don't forget to bring your passport when you cash over the counter. see: - http://www.monexcyprus.com/
