We have some friends coming over, staying at the Rocks on a package, who like to walk out at night for a drink and a meal. Can anyone suggest restaurants with good food preferably please, and what nights they are open or closed, that can be walked to from the Rocks. Thank you.

The only decent restaurants in Kyrenia are Niazi's or the Grapevine, the rest are rubbish.

Niazi and The Dragon both next door to the Rocks. Also Stonearch in the back street of the harbour.

The Dragon is dreadful, poor excuse for Chinese food, I have eaten better in the back streets of most cities in the UK.

Effendies in the old quarter, they also have live music certain nights. It's great to walk in the old quarter and see the old buildings and feel the atmosphere

The only other restaurant in the whole of the TRNC that was any good has now gone. GUIDO's. A fine chef who served fine food. Would cook what ever was requested (within reason) and hosted by the lovely Lilli.

Anyone worth their salt in the restaurant business doesn't stand a chance against the 15tl crap places that dominate the place.

The Dragon was very good last time i was there about three weeks ago. Funnily enough most of the customers were Chinese so it must be good.

If they fancy a taste of 'local' then take them to BEYTI at the top of Tin Pan Alley on the left. Open 24 hours, good food, good value & good service.

What about "14" near Efendis. Lovely surroundings and good food.

I cannot agree about Guidos, situated on a main road with ok ish food. Nothing to shout about.

There are many good restaurants in Girne and surrounds - I agree Niazis is always a good experience. What sort of restaurants do your friends eat in when in UK? Knowing this would give a better chance of recommending the right sort of thing.

By the way Effendis was great when we last visited and so was Tango to Buddha (but a very different experience) but a quick look around this forum will reveal many good restaurant recommendations but as ever there will be widely differing opinions on most restaurants which is probably a healthy situation.

Take no notice of anyone who rubbishes everything which is not a helpful response.

Its a personal thing! For me, I like to eat in places where they serve food that I would not easily make myself.

or its an effort to do so. Not sure what the point is going somewhere to eat Pasta dishes or Parma ham and melon, or crumble and such like if you can easily do it yourself and probably better.

I would recommend 'Maide' its a few minutes from the Rocks on Ersin Aydin Sokek, Kyrenia, Cyprus.

It does delicious Ottoman cuisine. Its set in a restored ottoman style house has big loungers at the front

Nice wines and cocktails, snacks etc.

All this information is great, thank you. Please add to it if you want. Our friends arrive next week and like good food, not fast food. Local or just well presented food whether it be European orTurkish.

If they don't want to walk but don't want to pay for a taxi, the Kybele restaurant at Bellapais (stunning setting) offers a free pick up & drop off service - just ring to arrange.

Hope you all enjoy some great meals.

years.

in my opinion there the general standard of food is not bad at all, have a look at living magazine's top 20 that may give you an idea.

I would recommend that you try the Pashabahce (Kyrenia Tavern) ajacent to the Fire station in central Girne, opp the law courts. You will need to go and make a reservation the day before and choose what you would like to eat. Its owned by a lovely couple who will serve you the finest home cooked food with a personal service rarely found these days and no I'm not related, just glad to recommend them.

Ikimiz Restaurant in the old quarter, just round the corner from Efendi , beside the old greek church. Without a doubt one of the best we have ever tried. It is owned and run by mother and daughter Fatma and Latife. Fatma is the cook who produces the traditional home made mouth watering food. Tel No 0533 880 6272

Ikimiz means the two of us!!

You have all been eating second rate food from third rate restaurants for far too long or you are all so tight that you frequent the 15 lira for 3 courses places and your taste buds are destroyed, have a week in france and re-educate your taste buds.

nicola, for someone who supposedly lives in Portugal, you should be in the Guinness Book of Records for taking the time to visit every "cheap" restaurant in North Cyprus in order to make an informed judgement on them all. Your opinions seem to have a sound basis in fantasy and is actually insulting to these restaurants or are you just a Ranter who needs a daily dose of abuse to make the day pass more quickly?

I have eaten in many restaurants in N. Cyprus and the majority are rubbish, served by waiters who are surly to say the least and couldn't care less about the customer.

nicola, stop digging a hole for yourself. How many different restaurants would you say you have visited in Cyprus? Don't forget, if they were rubbish a year ago there is a good likelihood they are no longer trading. Nowadays poor food and service is inviting bankruptcy in all but the most exclusive restaurants.

Nicola,

I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in France and I can say with authority the food was pretty dire. most plates filled up with second class chips. I did not have one decent meal in a restaurant. In fact one time my lamb chops were so tough I just could not eat them. When I complained I just got a gallic shrug. It was also very very expensive, not taking account of the poor rate of the pound against the Euro i.e the price in euros

From my 11 years of experience here, most of the restaurants are pretty good. How long have you been coming here? How many restaurants have you tried? If Guidos is your bench mark I am afraid that you cannot be that discerning. You need ambience, atmosphere and good food to make eating out a pleasurable experience. Guidos could only partly fulfil one of these criteria. I know because it was our local and nearest place to eat.

I agree with you flossie, if you lived here then you would certainly know where to go and eat. To name a few, Bella View/Bellapais, Sabor/Lefkosa, Archway/Zeytinlik, Laguna or Niyazi/Kyrenia, Keyfi Sefa/Karaoglanoglu, Set Fish/Old Harbour, Alagadi Fish (1st on the left as you pass Benoz), Efendi/Kyrenia, Manipeni/Kyrenia. For me all of the previous provide fantastic food and great service. I do find if you treat the waiter with respect and an interest in them you will get it back. Trust me with my husband in tow nearly all the waiters knows us as he makes a point of finding out their name, asking them where they come from and from then on we get the best service.

How wrong you all are, I am certainly not NN, maybe that is why gelin lists second class eateries as good, spangles thank you for the welcome but you are still wrong.
