I never bought manure in my life but this morning a chap knocked on my door and he was selling them in large sacks, 20 TL/sack. He estimated that I needed 11 sacks for my garden and he offered to do the work free of charge. So he unloaded the sacks and is coming Monday morning to look afer my flowers, cut the grass very deep and manure everything for 240 TL. I may employ him regularly if he can deliver good results. What do you think of the price?

Yorgozlu; that's what I meant! The "real thing" because I though you had a small chicken farm or something (I remember you offering fresh eggs once - please forgive my ignorance if made a mistake)

Hi Ismet,

Before you use the manure for the garden it needs to decompose.

We buy year old manure for our garden in England, I don't know if the process would be quicker in TRNC?

The manure hasn't much smell when it's this old.

Broken down goats manure is the best that we have found for our garden, as long as it is broken down i.e. not pellets but more of a powder then you cannot go wrong.

I;m not an expert gardener-but agree manure should be well rotted before use, fresh manure has a high acidic content which will kill many plants.

Though some plants ,shrubs and trees prefer acidic fertiliser such as acers(maples)and many conifers-suggest you do a google search on 'ericacious'.

Hope this helps.

PS-a soil testing kit is a worthwhile purchase.

Thanks Yorgozlu.

I got the eleven sacks of manure lined up in my front garden and I will not pay a penny until the job is done. I passed by the sacks a minute ago and I did not smell anything, so that must be good. The chap claims to be a gardener with nine men working for him, so I may hire him for routinbe maintenance but first I must see the results. He claims that he was a top gardenerer at the bases but they all say that. We will see. Oh, he claims that his manure is free from unwanted seeds because he spreys them with some pesticides.

When I first moved into my house, the builder's foreman asked me to leave the gate open one morning - asked why he said "I am going to leave a load of "s***" in your drive"! Turned out to be a present of several bags of goats/sheeps manure and gave the new garden a really good start. Have been buying sheep/goats manure at approx 5 - 7 TL per bag for years, never checked the age, but no smell and produces good results.

Last year the Catalkoy Riding Stables advertised free horse manure (which in England was always considered best for rosesand makes a good mulch because of the stray content) for collection. BUT that is fresh and must be left to rot, so I decided it would be too much of an effort to devise somewhere to keep it where the dogs wouldn't be constantly trying to get into it for a really delightful roll.

mikelapta;

I couldn't agree with you more, regarding the age because we are in the same boat. The comment was meant as a joke, and I am sure (I hope!) that's how everyone else took it as

Elko! Look what you've done now! Do you realise we have all been talking about a load of bull sh** for the past 20 posts!

Someone once told me that chicken manure is the best for plants, but traditionally people have been using cow and horse manure for farming in Cyprus. It could well have been because they were/are more abundant.

Actually I was told that pigeon manure is the strongest but has to be well aged. The famous gigantic water melons from Diyarbakir are grown with pigieon manure.

The subject may be shit but I see that many are interested in it

I thought the pigeon shit is very acidic and I agree with Simbas that it may be a health hazard! But I guess the Turks have grown immune to shite...
