cannot give a reference but wasn't there some sort of ground-cutting ceremony in turkey about six months ago? it all appears to be happening but rather slower than originally hoped: there is a reservoir and other works required in the trnc but would be possible for sometime in 2014/2015 I'd suppose in addition to a water pipe, they may well string an electric cable alongside and that could use power generated by the projected (russian) nuclear plant

Would it not be a good idea to include a gas pipe within the structure, so that following a settlement Cyprus (as a whole) could export their possible gas finds to the turkish distribution system?

Don't worry about completion date and don't hold your breath. No project gets completed on time in countries around the Med ! But it is looking hopeful and may help bi-zonal relationships much further down the line. In the meantime we in the TRNC look forward to the future benefit. pc4854......rofl.....You are joking aren't you ? If not, then you have no idea regarding current events and the situation here. The GC's are not going to share anything with Turkey. Not that they need it. It's going to be bad enough getting them to share with the Turkish Cypriots. And then only with EU pressure !

Reminds me of Crossrail in London. Proposed 1989 (in its current form, previous proposed in 1948 and 1974), work started in 2009, first trains to run in 2018. Maybe.

Surely it is a HECK of a lot easier/ cheaper to run a water pipe than to tunnel under a densely populated city..

Yes Mark it is easier but the point I was trying to make is that it can and does take a long time to even decide to do a major civil enginering project and how to fund it, even in 'advanced' countries like the UK. It can be argued that it has taken 30+ years for the UK government to decide to do crossrail. Yes a water pipline is a smaller project but it is still a major project I would suggest.

They could include the latest idea of a fibre optic telephone cable as well. I'd love to find this pipeline, gosh the amount of stuff in it must be huge by now..

If the pipeline is 'engineered' it will contain a lot of redundancy for future upgrades and services, which can years down the line be sold or rented to other companies etc to bring in revenue, things like facilities for TV services, high speed data lines etc etc. So, we will likely get a water pipe. Msg #13 - Depends who is engineering it Mark, I could engineer a tunnel under a city easier than our 4 year old could install the pipe.

Re Message 7 Geejay No I did not mean that the GC's would share their gas with anybody. I suggested that Cyprus as a whole would need to be able to export their gas and that could only be done by pipeline or ship. Turkey already has the means to distribute gas all over Europe. Such a pipeline to Turkey would benefit everyone and GC or TC, the gas is no good unless you can distribute it.

I am becoming comfortable at the thought of using a calculator but still have no idea how the marvel works. I remain in awe of things such as Skype communications and now with a webcam too. The thought of receiving combined volatiles such as water, electricity, gas, and fibre optics, etc, in one pipe is even more daunting. I visualise Deputy Dawg being sent to the kitchen to make the Wilderbeast (bless her) a cup of tea, turning on the tap, with electric kettle in hand, getting a 220 vault shock which boils the water without plugging the kettle in but sends me to the kitchen floor whilst the gas is ignited by the electricity cremating me before the fibre optics have time for an automated telephone call to the Coroner's office. "Wildee" would be saved the bother of autopsy and funeral arrangements so I suppose she will willingly embrace such advances in technlogy.

We have people up here on two occasions now measuring height and angle of our road, taking measurements of properties which are on corners of road marking GPS details on the drive as they say "in preparation of the water pipe". It's all to do with water pressure requirements. They will eventually assess that there are xxxxflats, xxxxhouses, xxxxhotels etc, TRUE, I've seen the evidence.
