Been told by a local TC who went to immigration office to ask for me, says he has been told if you are over 60 you do not need to have temp residency, you can stay in TRNC as long as you like, and your visa should be stamped but no days should be put on it. He says immigration will charge you if go and APPLY but you do not need to as the manager or whoever he was when you go into Immigration Main Door and go though doors on the left then to office on the left says if you are over 60 you do not need to apply. This was then confirmed by someone over 60 who said that too many people apply and pay needlessly. Is this all true? Will be 60 when I need to re do my temp residency in April, if do not need to pay again for 2 years will save some tl.

Happy, only loking for confirmation what I have been told via immigration is right, tried asking why they do not tell applicants over 60 and kept getting told if people want to pay for stamp then they can.

There was a long thread on this subject a couple of weeks ago, I think people have got a bit bored with it! To put it in a nutshell nobody seems to be able to confirm this it appears to be hearsay but maybe I am wrong...............

There are facts, even though they may change from day to day, but in this instance, regardless of age, if you are a non TRNC Citizen and you wish to stay beyond your 'Tourist visa stamp date' you must go and get residency. Simple as that. Nothing to do with age - only to do with residency laws. And go to the top to find out. Don't even believe me, or BRS(!) but go to immigration or talk to a lawyer who knows about it. If you do not get the correct visa for your stay, you will be fined when you try to leave - it was catch up on you and it is just not worth it. Of course, if you wish to pop ouyt of the country every three months (or whatever the duration of your visa) for a holiday and come back, that is a different matter. But of course, you certainly can't get a driving licence, or possibly not even a mobile phone account and if you have a mobile you won't get roaming etc, etc etc.

Thankyou!, Thankyou! At last a sensible response, but Marion I fear that the RUMOUR machine will continue to trundle along! Perhaps an interview with the relelevant Government Department could verify Residency criteria etc!

Yes, Cocklebay, sadly rumours like the poor will always be with us. But one does not have to give them houseroom. That is how they are spread. And if it helps give my words any credibility, I have spoken to Immigration (but then there are those who will say 'ah but they tell a different story to others in immigration'. Ye,s but whatever the story, disobey residency and pay in another way! So let none of us be haters, fools or gullible. best walk in the light of truth! Or as the Good Book says 'test the prophets'

RUMOURS, FOOLS, GULLIBLE. Cocklebay. Remind me again, just how long have you been here? How many times have you seen the 'procedure' change? Marion; you should know better than to encourage the ignorati.

As always, if you know the right people anything can be done here. A 60+ year old friend of mine (via his TC neighbour) sorted all this out last year. He was told you do not have to have residency after 60 years old and he now has a letter from the Chief of Police in case he has any problems. However, Deniz1 is also right in that if you do not have residency you cannot get a TRNC driving licence. Luckily for my friend he already has a 10 year licence so no problem for him.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but what authority does the Chief of Police have over the Immigration Dept. One is employed by the army and the other by the government. I still wouldn't risk it, even if I did have a letter from the Chief of Police.
