A couple of weeks ago there was a discussion about crossing over to the other side using a paper licence. I was wondering if any one has done it?

Didn't see the original discussion but I assume you mean the old UK paper licence? If so, I have crossed the border using this without problem.

Yes thats what i meant. My uk photo licence has expired but i still have the paper one which is ok. Thanks for that.

I tried to go over with just my paper one and they made me turn back. Obviously depends on who you have on the day.

You can cross the border and get insurance with your photocard date expired, however, you cannot get your car tax (required annually, no charge) for the south without a valid photocard license, they will not accept the paper counterpart even though it is the official part of the license!! Go figure!

What about all the people who have never had a photocard licence. It's still not obligatory in the UK. unless, for some reason, you have to change details. As a result there are many people living here who do not have a photocard licence at all.



The paper licences, the original & the counterpart are totally different.
