Thanks Turbo, that looks a possibility but I would like to be a little closer to home. I had hoped the no smoking ban would have kicked in but most places seem unaware or unwilling to act on it. More suggestions welcomed.

Hi nifty duo. I'm writing from the Mountain View Hotel in Karaoglanoglu. Other guests coming for Christmas lunch have enqired about whether the restaurant will be smoke free. We have decided to provide a smoking section at one end of the restaurant, and a non smoking section at the other end. This way everyone is kept happy. You are right about about a lot of places being slow to act on the ban. If you require any more information please feel free to give us a call, 0392 822 3453. If you would like to come and have a look at the restaurant area, please do and I will gladly show you around. Oz

ozwozz86 You said 'We have decided to provide a smoking section at one end of the restaurant, and a non smoking section at the other end' So what happens in the middle? Just joking!

Bowman, the no smoking ban is now in operation but hotels have the option of providing an enclosed smoking facility but only until 2010. This is how I understand it but this is North Cyprus and laws here seem to have a different meaning to different people but, hey, who would change it!

The ban is not enforcable until Jan 2010. That is when establishments can be fined for breaching this law.

niftyduo You could always eat your Turkey outside! Leaving the smokers happily inside. Though obviously in a different area from the non-smoking Vegetarians that you might upset! They may have to choose a different area from anyone else who do not partake of Alcohol. Oh! Hang on! where do you go if you don't smoke but eat Turkey and drink Alcohol? Maybe in a different area from those Vegetarians who smoke & drink! That could be in the area where Atheists have to eat seperately from Christians. That could be fairly near the area reserved for Halal meals, with or without tobacco, but probably no alcohol. Oh Dear! That could lead to cross contamination between Halal and non-Halal food which is not acceptable, regardless of the sensitivities of Halal eaters who may not be drinkers, but may be smokers. The ideal venue would obviously have at least 10 distinct areas for people to enjoy Christmas together! ??? Or you could cook at home! Rob

These threads do sometimes get very silly which sad really because this forum can be very useful for exchanging information, getting help and offering help. Just for the record, I have no problem with people smoking and I respect their right to do so but I just do not wish to share it with them.

I reckon there is an optimal number of posts after which any thread gets a bit off topic.

Wilts Girl This ones not gone 'off thread' yet! Must be a record! I agree with Turbo, the Bella View is a cracking hotel, luxurious and relaxing, with a non-smoking policy for it's rooms and restaurant, but balanced with smoking allowed in the bar area. Ask for Emrah, lovely lad! Rob

to glw. I would certainly not be trying to change the culture of any country, but like the rest of thw world N. Cyprus has to accept the fact that smoking is dangerous for health especially in passive smoking and sickening to inhale from someone else's table during a meal. sorry but that is just fact.

paula Just a few corrections. By stating that 'N Cyprus 'has' to accept',... is a statement of asking a foreign country to accept your views, not your statement of 'not trying to change a culture'. Similarly 'the rest of the world', ... is a personal opinion, not statistically correct. 'dangerous, especially in passive smoking',... again this has not been proven by any world health organisation. 'sickening to inhale from someone elses table,...' again a personal opinion, not a factual logic from any medical research. 'that is just fact',... Err,.. where are your 'facts',... do they come from the WHO? Where are your statistics? Where is the research by approved bodies? I understand you have a personal distaste of smokers, but to make wild assumptions, claiming they are facts is actually very silly. Please don't make wild assumptions about Billions of other peoples lifestyles just because they don't accord to your views. No disrespect Rob

To Paula - Not sure about how you reach your 'conclusions' - but your views tick all the PC boxes, so I'm not going to argue !

Niftyduo, You wont have to share "other peoples smoke" if you go back to your own country for Christmas! You can be assured the UK now has really clean healthy air since smoking was banned in pubs.
