I found several places in TRNC where one can use his/her computer (and smartphone/tablet) via a free WI-FI connection. Here are two of them: Santoria Sports Bar in Alsancak and Sardünya Bay in Lapta.

There must be more places - do you know one or more..?

Back of Malpas hotel!.

Also, the Lodge in Çatalköy, the bar will give the password but you need to remind them to switch it on! I think I've also seen a sign up outside the coffee shop beside the Electricity Board in Girne advertising they have free Wifi access, though I've never used it myself.

It may be convenient for everyone - based on this thread I've made a list (credit to C44 given) which I can add to and change if needed.

Do you actually need to be inside these establishments or could you sit in their carpark? This is a theoretical question, I have no desire to lump my laptop all over the island.

@ msg 35, suehowlittle: You can sit inside or outside of the establishment offering (free) Wi-Fi - as long as you stay inside "the signal" (a circle around the wireless router, connected to the Internet). The diameter of the circle depends (brand of the router, are there concrete walls with iron between your wireless device and the router, does the router stand in a cage of Faraday etc.).

I have found now quite a lot of places with very good signals, where I use my iDevices (Apple iPhone 4 and iPad 2 Wi-Fi & 3G). A great experience!

Why would anyone put a wireless router in a Faraday cage?

Hans, as you're a cartographer, could you make a simplified map showing the hotspots? With the cooperation of the ISPs you could also include the commercial hotspots. and as it would be online it could be updated as the services change. (And maybe you could sell hard copies at the airport, ports and border crossings).

@ msg 37: (...) 'does the router stand in a cage of Faraday'... this is so funny K. (...)

▶ Right. I should have said "in a room wher effects like in a cage of Faraday may occur". Or do you sell routers that work perfectly in any room of a house/building and at any place? I can show you in my house that it is very important where the router is situated. That goes for any brand of router and any house/building.

@ msg 39: (...) DutchCrusader Your English is rubbish. (...)

▶ You are right. Misschien wilt u liever in het Nederlands corresponderen?

@ msg 40: (...) Surely DutchCrusader as you are posting the question on C44, you should have the courtesy to post the answers on C44 (...)

▶ I'm not sure I understand your post. I asked in msg 1 for locations with free Wi-Fi. They were given in this thread on C44. And I made a list (see msg 29) which you can read here:

▶ [ http://www.cyprusnow.info/posting.php?mode=edit&f=7&p=1126 ].

What other answers do you

@ msg 38: (...) could you make a simplified map showing the hotspots? (...)

▶ I don't produce any hard copy maps anymore, but this week end I'm working on a digital map (in the beginning a draft for portable devices like smart phones and tablets). Not sure if it works out, because I don't know the coordinates of all the Wi-Fi locations in this thread. I'll see what I can do and maybe some interested people may give me some help.

Hans; do you want us to post the GPS co-ordinates of these places, or mark them on a Google Earth map? Would this help?

@ Msg 47, Donaldson: Thank you for your reply! GPS coordinates would suffice to put the hotspots on a map (for computers and mobile devices).

Several C44 members have offered help to locate the hotspots (with free or paid for Wi-Fi) in TRNC.

The list with the names: ▶ [ http://www.cyprusnow.info/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=282&p=1126#p1126 ]. Thank you.

I'm working on a map with all the TRNC hotspots and will make this map available for C44 members also.

You'll be notified in this thread.

P.S. So far seven people emailed me about their interest in GPS (mapping, discussions etc). I'll send them a reply with basic ideas about a "TRNC GPS Group").

Tip: to help it is enough to give the coordinates (GPS device) or the exact spot of a location with free or paid for Wi-Fi on a Google map.
